It’s official….
I’m older than dirt.
It’s bad enough that I went gray at 16. I was too young to care and too young for it to matter. Later, I became close personal friends with L’Oreal, a lifelong friendship that survives to this day.
However, despite the fact that every single member of my family–both immediate and extended–every sister, grandparent, aunt, and cousin thrice removed, have all worn glasses since an early age, I miraculously escaped this. I was the sole 20/20 girl in the entire clan.
Lately, however, I’ve been noticing something odd happening. Manufacturers, road crews, local governments, and marketers have all joined in some kind of global conspiracy. Yes, I’m talking about the conspiracy to start printing things in really really tiny microscopic print. I know it looks like the same old print, but clearly, there’s something fishy going on, because suddenly it’s all wavy and blurry and no matter how much I squint, it doesn’t self correct.
What is going on here, I say? Surely it can’t be a user error. Because, that would mean the unthinkable. That I would have to retire my Sole 20/20 status amongst the clan. No, no! Conspiracy, I tell you.
So I set up a secret meeting with an optometrist…mostly so she could tell me that, yes, it was all one big giant conspiracy drummed up to boost designer frame sales in the age of Lasik.
Sadly…I was informed that, uh, no….no such conspiracy. “You just need glasses. After all, you ARE 46.”
So there you have it. Older than dirt. Confirmed.
But I did get cute, Tina Fey frames. Red, natch. (Girl has to make the most of a sad, sad situation…there might have been some consolation ice cream involved in there somewhere, too….)
Don’t forget, last day to enter this weeks’ SHaQ Attack contest. And speaking of SHaQ…..tonight’s the night, baybees! It’s on!! GO MIAMI!!!

I really like your frames!! I have had to wear glasses ever since the third grade which seems forever and ever ago.
I like them! I’ve had glasses since the 6th grade. Now, at 45 1/2 I think I’m about to face another glasses milestone - bi-focals. This is what I get for razzing my SIL for having to hold menus out at arm length. Noooooooo!
And I watched So You Think You Can Dance last night and it wasn’t so bad. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I think I’ll watch it next week without the “there’s nothing else on” stigma.
I’m celebrating tonight too because it means it’s FINALLY over, both college and pro and I can regain control of the remote after MONTHS of nothing but basketball … (but go Miami!)
I like the glasses Donna I think you look great in them. Thankfully if ya have to wear glasses-me included-they make wonderful frames now. I remember when I learned that I needed glasses the pickings were horrible big ugly things!I seen some that you can barely see the frames the other day,it’s amazing how far they have come in frames.
The glasses look great Donna! Almost identical to mine, actually. I picked up Not So Snow White last night, but sadly, didn’t get to start reading yet. I’m locking myself in the bathroom tonight with a bubble bath and the book and making my hubby put my daughter to bed! Not really, but I am looking forward to getting started on it!
They look great! I found I needed glasses when I was in 8th grade. I swicthed to contacts after my accident when I was 16, couldn’t push them back up when they slid down after that.
‘So You Think You Can Dance’ was much better last night!
I love the glasses! I’ve been wearing mine since high school. I used to get headaches from too much reading so the glasses really helped the eye strain. You’ll get used to them… think of it as a fashion statement.
Thanks you guys! Making me feel better about the frames. Fortunately, I only wear them for reading (now, anyway. lol) And they’re comfortable. I’m getting used to it.
Eve - I watched SYTYCD last night, too and liked it better, too. It’s getting closer to The Show that I remember last summer. Still think Nigel’s a wanker, but whatever. Simon he’s not. Once the competition starts in earnest, I’ll probably blog. I like having all the judges back, glad Shane is on board this year, and even Mary is less loony.
And um, Jill….I hate to break it to you, but it’s a best of seven series. So it’s not exactly over tonight. Only Game 1.
But soon….really soon! (You’ll get the remote back just in time to have NOTHING to watch. Grumble grumble summer programming…)
Oh, and Trish - you rock!! Thanks for picking up Snow White. I went into my Borders last night, STILL not on the shelves there. Borders Boy was all, “um, uh, I think they’re on a cart somewhere. Do ya want me to look for em?”
No. No, just my ENTIRE career rests on booksellers like you actually putting the books, you know, OUT. On the SHELVES. But please, don’t go to any trouble on my account.
And he actually says, “Do you want me to call you when we find them? I can hold a copy for you.”
No. I just want you to SHELVE them. Even sell a few of them if you’re so inclined.
Sigh. And I love my Borders.
The glasses look good. I just got a new pair last week. I have Not so Snow White on request from the library. I would buy it right now if I had the money, but I cannot wait that long to read it. So I will buy it later when I get the money saved.
Donna, OMG!!! I think I’d have been tempted to drag him back to the stock room and find them myself! Or at least wait while he did! Hope they get the books shelved soon. I wouldn’t want anyone to be deprived of reading your wonderful books!
I bought your book at my local Target store. I finished reading it last night and it was great. I really loved the attitude you gave Tess. The glasses look good.
Next time I’m in Borders I’ll do a “Jill” for you. Which author would you like me to put copies of your book in front of? I’m only talking about authors who have a lot of books on the shelf and one copy of your book wouldn’t obscure theirs. I usually put one of Jill’s in front of Nora …
The glasses look great…and you sound like my dad…he won’t admit he needs glasses, but he did get some cheap ones at the store to use for reading.
I have had glasses since 8th grade and I am blind without them. I want contacts, but haven’t gotten them yet. I am nervous about the surgery thing though to correct the vision.
I haven’t got Snow White yet, but I have been busy…my sister gave birth yesterday to my new niece. I will definitely look for the book when I can.
that is funny, i feel old too. lol
Well Eve…if you just haaaaappen to wander over into the fiction department and stumble over the piles of books by the lovely and talented Sophie Kinsella (whom I adore) and who happens to be shelved right next to me. And then, you know, totally by chance, accidentally knock some of my books over near hers… I figure in mistaken sales alone, I should be able to afford my ice cream habit for the rest of the year.
Your glasses look really good! I’ve had to wear glasses ever since I was about 4 or 5 years old and I have to wear these things all the time.
Once I was in Wallyworld and made at least two solid columns of nothing but Room Service Okay - stopping at Borders on Sunday - the ol’ switcheroo is on.
I love your glasses! I’ve had glasses since third grade, and then got contacts in seventh. Every year my vision gets worse. I blame my father. LoL
Love the glasses, very cute frames! Very chic and glasses are in this summer…right?
How’s Immortal Highlander coming?! I am currently reading that series, waiting for touch of the highlander to come in, would you believe neither of the borders, nor barnes and nobles had that book in? They had every other book in the series but not that one and thats the one I need. Figures, me and my impatient luck!
Donna - I’m totally loving your glasses. They’re really cute. I’ve been wearing glasses for the last 14 years, and they’re now just an accessory - different frames for different days.
I finished reading Not So Snow White last week - it took forever for Amazon to deliver it here in Australia - and it was fantastic. I finished it in 2 hrs, so for anyone who has it but hasn’t read it, put it at the top of your TBR pile immediately.
Take care everyone…
I started wearing glasses in my late forties. I didn’t have much choice. I couldn’t read my books anymore!!! I like your frames! You look nice!
Patty and Alicia - thanks, you guys! Glad to hear you enjoyed it.
Eve - thanks for the creative shelving.
And Jamie - Immortal Highlander is coming along just fine. With graduation looming next week for my oldest, I haven’t had as much time to read, but it’s been the perfect distraction when I can sneak in a few minutes.
Your post is on target. Keep it up.
