Another finale, another hunh.

So…at least JT won. Other than that, I’m 0 for 2. It’s interesting, because in the case of both DWTS and American Idol, and Survivor, too, actually, I liked all the finalists, so there was no “wrong” answer for me. Until, you know, there was. JT wins Survivor and it feels very right. Then Shawn wins DWTS and I realize, yeah, I like her, but that doesn’t feel so right. Same with last night. I adore Kris, and I even think the outcome suits both contestants with the best possible chance moving forward. And yet? Didn’t feel right. Just sort of seemed like Adam should have had his moment bathed in the glory he earned. Kinda.

Still, I’m happy for Kris. Happy for the family. Even happy for Adam as now he doesn’t have to record a song he should never be caught dead singing in public and certainly has created enough of a spectacle for himself that if he can’t make something from that, then he doesn’t deserve to anyway. So…it’s all good.

Except I was disappointed anyway. And I didn’t think I would be. Not as much as I was.

What didn’t disappoint me was the finale show. A bloated two hours and so I expected it to drag along. Instead it flew by with a guest list that just kept getting more amazing. Now, not all the performances were good ones (I am SO sorry Steve Martin. Wow. Will you ever forgive American Idol? That was so….not right.) But enough of them were to make the show purely entertaining.

Things I loved: Nick Mitchell. One last time. Kara killing on Whitney and getting the Best.Smackdown.Ever, while even making some dough for charity. Kris and Keith. Show of hands who thinks maybe Arkansas Kris might want to flavor flav up his music a bit on the country side, because that was good stuff. Alison and Cyndi Lauper. Totally made of win.

But most fantastic? Watching Adam get to play in the sandbox with Kiss. And Queen. The former was just pure fun for this 70’s and 80’s girl. But Queen, that was nostalgic bordering on poignant. Did you see the look on Brian May’s face listening to Adam do Freddie? I would pay to see those two do a few sets. Wow. RIP Freddie, and how cool was that, huh? I know you loved it. Eeriespookycool.

Loved the camaraderie between the final two, purely positive and very sincere. Loved Kris’s total unpreparedness to be the winner, love Adam’s total joy for his pal. It was an evening made of win. And for that, I applaud all of it.

But still….

What say you all? DISH!!

Tonight begins my fave dance show ever, which doesn’t quite take the edge off the fact that I don’t get to see what Adam does next week, or any week afterward any longer…but certainly doesn’t hurt. Bring on the auditions!!

  1. I was surprised that Adam didn’t win, but not unhappy at all that Kris won. I think Kris needs the American Idol title more than Adam does. Adam will do just fine on his own.

The Kris and Keith Urban duet was great! I think that Kris could do quite well as a country pop singer.

I LOVED the way Kara stole the spotlight from Bikini Girl! :-)

I HATED Steve Martin’s song. Sorry, Steve.

I am going to miss the show!

  2. I wasn’t surprised. Something tells me the voting demo clusters in the south. For instance, fans in L.A. watch the show but would never admit to it, let alone pick up a phone to vote for a contestant (besides, we’re too busy texting while driving).

Have to say I truly loved the show the last night. Most memorable moments for me: Allison and Cyndy Lauper (I wouldn’t have had a problem with Allison being in the final 2), Adam with Kiss, the expression on the faces of Adam and Chris as they sang the ‘we are the champions’ line to each other, the whole Queen thang (Adam, you really need to hook up with them–go on tour or something) , and…the best of all…Cara ripping her dress apart. TOTALLY UNEXPECTED, and almost (note: almost) made up for that f’d up song she concocted for those poor boys to perform.

And, thanks Donna, for another great series of recaps! I’ve enjoyed them so much. Got a huge kick out of the previous post (the one where I joined you at the shallow end of the pool for an adult beverage with umbrella). Can’t wait for “So You Think You Can Dance!”

  3. I think I’m totally not watching any reality shows for a while. I realize it’s not just talent but the whole package but seems to me it ended up popularity over talent. I am sorry but there is no way anyone can convince me she was the best dancer by a long shot. And Kris also wasn’t the best. I liked all the finalists but I didn’t think that was the point of the shows.
DWTS final was boring but Idol put on a fantastic show. I loved it all until the end lol.

  4. I was very surprised that Adam didn’t win. What a great show and the finale was until the announced Kris’s name. I have thought for a while that Adam had a voice as good as Freddie Mercury and it was wonderful to see him singing with Queen. The Amazing Race seemed like it ended the right way but Dancing With the Stars and American Idol seem like they got their ending wrong to me.

  5. Adam should have won but he is better off not being under AI’s thumb. That was a fantastic finale show!

  6. I agree about Adam…I loved him! But I think that Adam will still go far without being the Idol, while I don’t think Kris would have if he lost. My favorite moment of the night was when Kara showed up Bikini Girl!!

And I can’t wait for SYTYCD! I heard they are doing it in the fall too!
