So, where do you like to….

…Read?

I’m having some technical difficulties this morning with my DSL, so I had to wait until I could invade my local wireless cafe to do my posting. And while frustrating on the technical front, I rather thought it might be nice to get out, have a nice morning cup of something (I’m not a coffee drinker…never developed a taste for it and I feel SO left out of the fun club with all those frothy looking concoctions…) But I digress… So I envisioned tucking myself into some corner booth, sipping on something, probably nibbling on something too, (I mean, if I HAVE to swap the bunny slippers for actual shoes and go out in public first thing in the morning, well a girl needs something for stamina) and write up my blog, and maybe linger and work on my book as well.

And you know what I discovered? I discovered that other people like to come to these little bistros and actually sit and talk to one another. Sitting in cute little booths right next to me. Talking. Sometimes even laughing. I know. The nerve. Don’t they know I envisioned this quiet, contemplative morning, just me, my sugar fix and my alternate non-coffee beverage? Apparently not. They invaded full force. Nary an empty table or booth to be found. Some of them even brought….children. Yes. It’s true.

Which led to the discovery that there is a reason I work in bunny slippers in the relative peace and quiet of my own home, or down by the river…or anywhere where I’m alone and it’s quiet. I’m a cave dwelling writer. I need peace and quiet to relax, concentrate, and focus. Which then led to me to contemplate my reading habits (while I nibbled, sipped, and tried not to eavesdrop on the conversations around me - oh who am I kidding? I totally eavesdropped. But it’s not my fault. They insisted on sitting next to me, right?)

So, anyway, I realized I like to read all curled up somewhere quiet and peaceful, too. It’s not mandatory, but I find myself far more easily distracted these days, so somewhere off away from the maddening crowd is preferable, if I get to do the choosing.

Yes, I can read sitting in crowded doctor’s offices, sitting in traffic, or on the metro, but I’m not as swept into the story. Other information keeps filtering in, distracting me. Magazines tend to suit better for those occasions. And it’s odd, because I’m such a people person. Anyone who has met met at booksignings can attest to this. Shy and retiring, I’m not. Nor have I ever met a stranger. I’m quite comfortable in crowds, whether they be filled with friends or complete strangers.

So why this aversion to all of them when I’m writing or reading, I have no idea. I guess I can’t get caught up in the world of my imaginary people if real ones keep intruding. :)

Where is your favorite place to read?

  1. I read in my bedroom surrounded by two cats and a dog. I never liked coffee either!

  2. just in my room or in the car for a long drive

  3. Preferably in my bedroom. but I like to read pretty much anywhere I can get a moment of peace and no interruptions (I am a stay at home mom of a 1 year old and 4 year old who does not nap, my life is interruptions).

  4. I like to read in the walk in closet in my bedroom. Every wall has a bookshelf filled with my books and I even have a pillow in there. Total relaxation.

  5. I like to read everywhere. I read all the time day and night. I read a work and get pretty upset when some asks for something. I love to read by the pool. I have actually heard my kids say to each other “Don’t talk to her she’s reading you know how she gets.” That is usually when I realize that I need to put the book down and play with the kids. I am also a wanna be writer and I can only write at night after the kids and husband go to bed. They are constant distractions when I trying to conjure up my pretend characters.

  6. Oooh, Julie, I want your walk in closet!!!

I have a little craft room - well nook actually - that I built in what was once a big walk in closet tucked under the stairs heading down to my basement. I love it, it’s tiny, but great and super functional…but now I’m envisioning shelves and a big pillow in the same space and…hmmm, I need another closet, dangit! :)

  7. I can read a good book anywhere.

  8. I’ve learned to not take a favorite author book with me when I go to the doctor’s office because it is too distracting.
I know what you mean about the frothy coffee drinks, they look so good, smell so good, but I don’t like the taste of coffee. Go figure.

  9. I will read anywhere but my favorite place is in my bed. I love coffee and usually have it when i’m on the computer clear into the night.

  10. I can’t have noise/distractions when I’m reading or writing. But I’m going to have to get used to it as I plan to start reading ebooks while sitting with my mother. Maybe she’ll stay quiet?

My favorite place to read is curled up in bed.

  11. I like to get up an hour earlier than I actually need to and curl up on the sofa. I love the quiet of house. No distractions and I can lose myself in my latest favorite book. I’ve never been able to read in bed. Somehow, bed and book just don’t go together for me!

  12. Like everyone else my favorite spot is in my bed with the air-conditioner right next to me. I think Julie’s use for her walk-in closet is so great.A little reading cubby, but big enough to lounge.so cool.

  13. On the couch in the den.

  14. Good observation, your ideas are right on.
