Dropping like little dancing flies….

So….another one bites the dust. Kinda. Last night on SYTYCD, I finally decided there was no more point in voting for anyone since we just keep sending the injured home each week instead. This week Billy Bell joins the IR list with a knee injury, though it looks like he might actually be able to come back. We’ll see… He’s been in the bottom so often anyway, that they might send him home tonight whether he can come back or not. Personally? I think it should be Jose, but then, personally, I don’t think I care all that much anymore.

We’ve got 6 dancer’s left and clearly it’s going to be Kent and Lauren in the finals, which - deserved - and between now and then, it’s more just an entertaining dance show to watch and not much in the way of an actual competition where, you know, people care who wins and all. At least it feels that way to me.

I did like the change up in the judgery last night. Good to see someone of Kenny Ortega’s industry standing on the panel, and I liked the change up in judging order. I think they should change it each week, or after each dancer, for that matter. Adam had more salient points to make last night, and though Mia was still utterly Mia (you decide if that’s a good thing) she was at least somewhat (and I use that loosely) more helpful with her critiques. At least she wasn’t as negative.

Routines I liked… I though the Jose/Alison edge-of-the-stage routine was interesting just for the whole “edge” perspective, and he did a good solo, but man, that mano-a-mano paso with Adechike was a weak steak with more weak sauce on top. I couldn’t even watch it all the way through. I thought Adechike’s hip hop with Comfort was really well done, but mostly because of the energy she brings to every performance. Adechike did well, but she really sold that performance. Lauren was solid in her hip hop with Twitch. I’m enjoying her, she’s a “happy dancer” and always brings a certain sparkle, and at this point this season, I’m all for that. I didn’t think her samba was all that, but I didn’t think she had the sizzle with Robert.

About Robert…it’s funny, because he’s good looking and a great dancer and I like his goofball sense of humor…but it doesn’t seem to translate for me on stage in a way that compels me to watch him. His sultry routine with All Star Lauren, while nicely choreographed, just left me going “they danced well” but not really affected by the piece. In fact, most of them had a “I could watch this or fast forward” feeling to them…

Kent had a fun night, if not a technically brilliant one. I thought he really invested himself fully in that step routine with Twitch, and absolutely gave it his all…but that it simply didn’t suit his body type, esp next to the Big Guy. I enjoyed his routine with Kathryn, however, and found it fun and light to watch.

So…I dunno. I’m watching, I’m enjoying…but I’m not caring so much.

But right now? DISH!

  1. I still like Kent, but I began to wonder last night if his country farm boy routine isn’t an act. The comment about him saying if he made the show he’d increase ratings etc. just makes me feel like I am being sold a bill of goods. But then he leaps in the air and I do think he’s an amazing dancer. And I love Jose’s smile, but think he’s reached his full growth. I thought the Paso was TERRIBLE, and not helped at all by the horrible camera work–there were points there when they barely had ONE of them in the frame let alone both. It’s a popular show–can they not afford some good camera directors? Anyway, I’ve taken to ONLY watching it on DVR so I can fast forward through it. Which means it’s only a short step away from not caring if it records or not. So sad!

  2. Jen, I completely agree about the camera work! And yes, I couldn’t make myself watch the paso past the beginning. I also watch on DVR. I do enjoy watching them dance and think the choreo this season has been some innovative work, but also question if, despite the fact that they’re drafting more experienced dancers onto the show now, many seasons in, if they shouldn’t instruct the choreographers to go a bit easier, given several seasons of show-ending injuries. I think with al the Emmy attention, the choreographers are more interested in nominations than they are the dancers’ safety.

  3. My favorites are Kent and Lauren. Personally, I think that Lauren should win, because she’s tackled the most diverse dances and done awesome on them. Let’s bring Dmitry in more often! I like the eye candy and maturity he brings. Has anyone else noticed that it’s all teenagers right now? I really miss Ryan and Ashleigh.
