Everybody dance!
And last night on So You Think You Can Dance, for the first time in the past month, everybody did.
For me, it was the most enjoyable performance night, overall, in some time. I’m glad they’re branching out a bit with the choreographers. Stacey Tookey and the freaking adorable Spencer Liff both stood out last night. We had another interesting and fun Bollywood routine, and I really loved the lyrical hip hop routine by Marty Kudelka.
Of the six remaining dancers, Billy probably had the best overall night in terms of memorable performances. His solo was really interesting (and I loved that they took the stupid countdown out of it, you could really enjoy the performance itself so much more without the audience chanting the countdown numbers out loud…) Then he had that wonderful Tookey contemporary piece with Ade about the homeless man, that I thought was really amazingly well performed. His Bollywood was also well done and his movements much sharper and more clearly defined than Robert (despite the fact that Robert’s look suited the roll better.) It definitely looked like he was struggling with knee pain at the end, so I hope the brace he wore was enough to keep him in it.
Lauren had a good night, too, but was apparently not feeling all that well. Word is she’s not injured, but was just dehydrated, so that’s good news. Her solo was also really well performed and unique. Her Damn Yankees Broadway number with Allison was energetic and suited her athleticism, and though I wasn’t as enamored of her fox trot routine with Adechike, I thought they did a nice job with it.
Kent was strong across the board and it’s still his to lose. His Tyce 50’s inspired jazz number with Jose was a lot of fun to watch and he was really good there (so was Jose, surprisingly.) His solo wasn’t as inspired as some of the others, but still performed well. What I really loved, though, was his cha cha with Anya. Was I the only one who kept thinking he’d tear that sheer white shirt off of her, though? It was really distracting me. And Mia? I like the Kent face. Leave it alone.
Adechike had a good night. His solo was athletic and graceful, he was a great partner to Lauren in the fox trot (and, I think, handled his part better than she did) but I really enjoyed his jazz routine with Courtney. I loved the abandon of it, and found it great fun to watch. Solid night for him.
Robert had a very Robert kind of night, which is to say solid and good…and yet somehow forgettable. His contemporary with Kathryn was moving and well done, but all eyes (including mine) were on Kathryn. Loved the twist at the end there. His Bollywood was done nicely in terms of enthusiasm, but not as sharp as Billy’s, and his solo was also just Robert-y for me. (He really needs to find something else to wear other than those awful retro 70’s tank tops he favors.) For me, he’d be in the bottom and going home tonight. He’s good, but he doesn’t grab me the way some of the other remaining contestants do.
Which is how I also feel about Jose. I loved-loved his lyrical hip hop routine with Comfort, but if you rewatch, you can see how hard she hits her moves, and how Jose just sort of flings himself through them. He has rhythm, but he doesn’t finish off his movements like she does. But I thoroughly enjoyed that routine. He also kept up with Kent shockingly well in that Broadway piece. Overall, a very good night for him, his solo was great…and yet, comparatively speaking, I’d send him home tonight along with Robert.
What say you dancin’ Blog Babes? Two must go tonight….who do you want to see stay to dance again? I think Lauren and Kent are finale-bound, but I think despite the judgery’s best efforts to get Adechike out of there, he’s going to survive the night, and Billy, who they love, despite his bottom three finishes, should as well. So…I think it’s buh bye, Robert and Jose.
