Dancing w the Stars announces new cast, and……um…..gulp.
Hello Blog Babes…it’s a new week and we have new stuff to dish about. Mainly? Dancing With The Stars announced their newest line up last night and, uh….it’s…interesting. Yeah, interesting. That’s one word to describe it. Another would be whack-a-doo. Just sayin.
Now, I know, every season I say something similar, but they’ve gone out of their way to really up the whackadoo factor this time. Don’t believe me? Here’s the list….then you tell me what you think.
Under the random but kinda interesting sports figures, we have Hope Solo, of the women’s soccer team. This was one selection I thought was pretty cool. She’s awesome with her feet as goal tender, wonder how she’ll do on the dance floor.
Under the controversial, “seriously?” sports figure heading, we have LA Laker, sometime rapper, and occasional brawler, the always outspoken Ron Artest. Because he needs another platform to talk. Sigh.
In the “I didn’t know they had a brother” column, we have Kardashian brother, Rob. Honestly, where has this kid been? I’ve never heard of him. Of course, I try really, really hard to never hear about anything about the Kardashian clan, so it’s not surprising, but given the media coverage of everything Kardashian, it still seems surprising. Not that I blame him for hiding.
And I’ll just say it, but as much as I admire Chastity-now-Chaz Bono for doing whatever he/she had to do to make peace with life and her/himself…I grew up watching Sonny & Cher, and it’s just weird for me to watch little Chas as big Chaz. Just me? Okay. But it’s just kinda squicky for me. (I know, I know, don’t send me letters!) I applaud him, I do. I just don’t want to watch little Chastity on my favorite show as a guy. It’s a sentimental thing, not a political statement.
On the other hand, the idea that I get to watch Queer Eye For the Straight Guy’s Carson Kressley trip the light fantastic fills me with joy and happiness. Could possibly be the most entertaining contestant evah. Dahling.
In the random pretty girl column we get George Clooney’s ex, actress Elisabetta Canalis and Hill’s girl, Kristin Cavallari. I’ve never seen either of them on screen before, so no investment from me there. Meh.
Over in the Making a Comeback column, we have Chynna Phillips of WIlson Phillips fame. I kinda always liked her, so this one made me smile. Plus she was great in Bridesmaids.
But way over in the Desperate to Make a Comeback Column, we also have Ricki Lake. I used to like her fresh, in your face kind of attitude, but then she kind of got a little super-inflated-ego thing going on, and… I’m not really sure she didn’t set fire to her own house, you know? So….another “really?” for me.
But if we really want to talk Bringing-the-Crazy, we can’t overlook the inclusion of Courtney Cox’s very outspoken ex…David Arquette. Train wreck on the dance floor anyone? I don’t know if the man can dance, but shouldn’t he still be working on getting his life and act together away from the spotlight? He seemed one step away from a Full Charlie (Sheen) to me. Okay, half-step. Not sure he should be quick-stepping in front of millions…
Then there’s Guy I Don’t Know…JR Martinez. Soap actor, and since I don’t watch any, not surprising I haven’t heard of him. But I’m interested in finding out. He seems….compelling.
But then they dropped the bomb on me. I put up with Jerry Springer and actually ended up liking the guy. On the show. Which made me want to at least give a chance to the inevitable follow up controversial political or television figure. And I didn’t like any of them. At all. So the chances of me rooting for Nancy Grace on this program? Pretty much nil. I know, did you just choke on your breakfast cereal like I did? Nancy. Grace. For that alone I may have to skip this season. I put up with the Palin offspring, the uber ridiculous Kate without her 8, and the downright gross Tom DeLay. Please, show, can’t you go one season without relying on this kind of thing?
So….there you have it. Excited? Yeah, me neither. Sigh. We find out today who the dance pros are and who is paired with whom. Maybe if Maks gets Nancy I’ll watch just for the smackdown potential… Otherwise, not really jazzed. I took one look at this list and thought…thank goodness Survivor and Amazing Race are back soon!
What about you? What do you think? Enter this week’s Free Stuff Friday contest by sending an email to donna@donnakauffman.com with “DWTS? I just want to read a new book!” in the subject line. Winner gets a free book from my website bookshelf. I’ll draw a name from the entries and announce it hear Friday. Don’t forget to check the Friday blog to see if you’re the winner!
Then hop back on over here and DISH! Are you watching DWTS this season? What fall reality show are you excited to see again? For me…it’s not this one!

Wow! That’s brutal. Seriously - all other C list actors have jobs???? There is a new a cappella singing competition starting sometime in September that looks like it could be good. I’ll try to figure out the name, cuz it might be a lot better than this! How sad for this show!
Still holding out for Richard Simmons! I wouldn’t have kept watching last season if not for Maks and Kirstie and this line-up makes me vaguely nauseous so I’m not hopeful. And if Elisabetta Canalis can’t dance in better than she acted on LEVERAGE, I’ll be poking my eyes out with a fork. Desperately missing Donny Osmond!
I’m worried about the Kardashian factor since I had made this vow to never watch anything Kardashian. OTOH, I really like Chynna Phillips, although liking someone doesn’t mean they can dance. And I don’t want Chaz Bono to go through any embarrassment and I’m afraid there is potential for that.. And Nancy Grace???? Well, I guess we’ll just have to watch and find out how it goes.
Angela, it’s The Sing Off. Love that show! I didn’t realize it was coming back on. All fun, no grinding of teeth.
Ha! Richard Simmons! And I didn’t know Elisabetta was on Leverage. I’ve watched that off/on. She must have been on the off weeks….
The only reason I might watch this season is to see if Maks’s brother is as yummy as he is, otherwise this season is just not compelling enough for me to waste the time on. *sigh*
Glad Maks is back and his brother Val is there this year. I feel sorry for the girl from the Hills she has Mark Ballas. ugh
I love that Val is a pro, too! (And they gave him George’s hottie ex….that could be a steamy pair!)
Not as thrilled that two of the DWTS dance troupe folks are now regulars, but maybe I’ll like them more this way. I was not a fan, at all, of the whole troupe thing last season. (Of course, they did give them Nancy Grace and Ron Artest. Which, admittedly, made me smile.
And Judy, the thing that bugs me about Mark, is once again he gets the young and beautiful contestant. At least they gave Derek Ricki Lake (which I think will be a surprisingly good pairing) and poor Tony Dovolani finally got a FUN contestant, with a fave of mine this season, Chynna Phillips. He was LONG overdue for that one!
Ethan from Survivor is going to be on the Amazing Race! Here is hoping he is as nice racing as he was surviving.
ok entered thanks
I think there are alot of so-called stars on this season of DWTS that I would love to not see on the show. I really like Lacey and w/her having Chaz she probably won’t be on long, and there are alot of other pairings that don’t look great. Here they are;
Kristin Cavallari and Mark Ballas
Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus
Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke
Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani
Elisabetta Canalis and Val Chmerkovskiy
JR Martinez and Karina Smirnoff
Ron Artest and Peta Murgatroyd
Ricki Lake and Derek Hough
David Arquette and Kym Johnson
Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer
Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Carson Kressley and Anna Trebunskaya
