Donna 1 Mountain 0

So yesterday was some of the best skiing I’ve ever done. (Which, as a mid Atlantic skiier isn’t say much, I realize, but it was relative to me.) Gorgeous day, upper thirties, blue skies, new powder. Stunningly perfect. No, I did not conquer the back side of the mountain. Being a holiday, it was packed. (That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.) But they did open two additional blue slopes that, for whatever reason, no one seemed to know about. So I stayed there all day. Me and my iPod, groovin’ down the hill. I haven’t skiied in a month, have only been a couple times all season, so I didn’t expect much from myself. I was just happy to have these huge trails mostly to myself and leave the crowds to the mogul hills and terrain park.

Maybe it was Olympic inspiration (though that would seem more probable if I had fallen alot, which I didn’t, not once - What me? Snark? Come on, this has been the year of Ooops! for a lot of our team and you know it) but everything was clicking in a way it never does. I considered taking this freakish, do-no-wrong mad skill to the dark side of the mountain, since who knows when I’ll ever be firing on all cylinders like that again, but figured, why ruin a good thing? (Excuse #2, which I’m also sticking with.) So me and Michael Buble (who makes an excellent skiing companion, I must say/Ed Grimley voice) hung out and just enjoyed the day, if not, exactly the lift lines.

Hopefully I’ll get one last trip up before the season ends, but if I don’t, well, I’d be happy with that as my season capper. No, I didn’t reach my goal for the year, the warm winter sort of took care of a lot of that, but I ended the season skiing a lot better than I started it, even if it was just for one freakish day…so I’ll take it.

Now…back to deadline hell. (And in case my editor is reading, yes, I was a good little author and an even nicer mother. After five solid hours of skiing, I sat in a packed lodge with way too many damp people and worked while my son and his girlfriend continued to enjoy a perfect day on the hill.)

Happy Tuesday, everybody!
