We came, we watched, they danced
Am I the only one really enjoying this season of So You Think You Can Dance? Wow. Last night we had Dirty Uncle Nigel, Screaming Mary, and Keepin it Real Mia, who loved more than she hated, so that was a nice departure.
I will say that I am appreciating the level of actual constructive criticism the dancers are getting this season - they’re all amazing and can be pushed that way, I think - even if I don’t always agree 100%. I do more than I don’t, especially as they replay clips from the performance highlighting the problem areas as they saw them.
All in all, I really enjoy the pairings this season and I think they’re all amazingly talented. You tend to totally forget some of these kids are street dancers as they really tend to rise to the overall level of skill around them. Like they’re all sponges.
Oh, before I forget…what was up with Screaming Mary’s Wilma Flintstone, Bedrock’s newest hooker outfit? Yikes.
Overall impressions:
Bottom three potential:
Thayne/Chelsea -they got contemporary from Mandy Moore and fell way short. It just never got going and had no emotional depth, but I love them and want them to stay.
Susie/Marquis - salsa from Alex de Silva and, yeah, who’d have predicted they’d tank on salsa given that is Susie’s strength? Partially I think Alex needed to calm way the hell down on the routine. It’s one thing for these judges to be competing to see what they can throw at these kids so they can look amazing as well, but if you go too far, then it ends up hurting rather than helping. I thought it was frantic. And, though I got what the judges were saying about Marquis as they showed clips of the routine in support of their comments, during the initial dance itself, I thought he was doing tons better than she was.
Comfort/Chris - krump from Lil C. Me? I thought fuzzy cheek Chris had an almost impossible task there as he can’t change who he fundamentally is, but he did get through it respectably. Mostly I thought the music choice was horrible and never invited the crowd into the dance. Comfort did what she could with what I thought was arguably the worst routine of the night. I like these guys and hope they stick around.
Who would go home for me? Susie, and unfortunately, Marquis.
Middling performances:
Mark/Chelsie - Argentinian tango, in which, shockingly again, it was Mark who shined, while I thought Chelsie had to work a bit harder at it. (Her dress? So not helpful. And who the hell styled her rats nest hair and gave her red hooker lips? Talk about how to make a pretty girl look like crap in three easy steps….)
And can I go on record as sayng the costuming for the men this week was spectacular, while the women were universally dissed (except Kherrington and the hip-hop/krump style performers.) Especially Chelsie, Khourtni and Susie - the styling and oh my god the color choice, did them flat out no favors. At all.
Khourtni/Matt - I like them way better than the judges apparently to. I thought her dress was horrific and did her no favors, but that they looked pretty cool and the choreo was wonderful. I could see a bottom three placement here, but feel the above deserve to be there more.
Jessica/Will got hip hop and while Will smacked it, Jessica struggled for the same reasons Chris did. It’s hard being a cheerleader in south central. But I will say that once she tossed that stupid hat away, she did get down a bit more and into it more solidly. Still, ultimately she does hold Will back, and that’s disappointing. I hope the judges total tongue bath of Will doesn’t backfire with the audience and viewers. They could be bottom three, but I hope not this week.
Courtney/Gev - I really enjoyed their routine and, though I thought they should have gone home last week, I think they definitely stick around on this one.
Top performances of the week:
Twitchington - seriously touching Viennese Waltz. It was lovely, graceful, and moving. But then, I’d like Twitch doing pretty much anything. I think Mia needed to back a little off on her glossy comments (whereas I think they might be right on in almost any other week for Kherington) and she seemed to get that she’d been a total buzz kill and shut up. Finally.
Joshua/Katee - love these two and was happy to see them get through a Tyce Broadway routine without being sentenced to death row because of it. Absolutely adorable.
Overall the show went by way too fast for me. Loving this season. And tonight? We get a Shane Sparks routine! Woo hoo!
Don’t forget to enter this week’s SHaQ Attack contest. Details in Monday’s post. Tune in tomorrow for more Dance MAC! Who goes home, who stays, who is in the bottom three. What did you think???
I am off to watch my youngest graduate from high school. In a few short months I will be an empty nester!! Yay/wah!!
DISH!

I am loving this season. So far I’m even enjoying the Broadway routines! You summed up the show perfectly IMO. Looking forward to seeing what Shane has come up with.
Congratulations to both your son and you! Hey, you’ll always have the Blog Babes.
