Happy Hump Day!

So, as my reward for not being in Deadline Hell any longer, I took myself to a matinee yesterday. Went to see Failure to Launch with SJ Parker and Mr Sexiest Man Alive. First, can I say, man, they both had really white teeth. And were seriously tan. It was a really fun movie. Loved the entire cast. Very quirky, which I wasn’t expecting. It was laugh out loud funny when normally I wouldn’t be laughing out loud. Of course, there was a really fun matinee crowd in there and we all had a great time. Very enjoyable. Highly recommended for escapist couple of hours of fun.

Okay…MAC time. Well, since My Phil dared to make Amazing Race a “To Be Continued” leg…I’m stuck MACing about American Idol.

Not much to say this early on except I think this is a very diverse group, not just in singing skills but in personality as well. And while there are definitely a number of the final 12 who shouldn’t be the winner, I can’t find myself actively rooting against any of them. It’s more a matter of who to root for the most.

So, they sang Stevie Wonder songs, which I thought would be a complete train wreck (given they’d already done a couple leading up to the final 12 and none had been well received.) I love Stevie and the man has one helluva catalogue (thank god, for this diverse group) but he’s also a wonderful singer who is really difficult to emulate. Not that they wanted to copy him, but he’s so distinct, putting your own stamp on his music was going to be no easy task. I really liked how each and every one of them seemed truly awed by having him there and extremely appreciative of the one-on-one help he gave them.

So, stand outs for me - sadly not Eliot or Mandisa tonight. It was like they had them all singing in some lower register or something and it rendered the songs somewhat dull. I am not a big Ace fan, though he is a cutie, he’s in my B Group tonight, but he was very entertaining. A shame he had to go in the forgettable first slot. And I’m not a Bucky fan, either, but he pulled it off way better than I’d expected. A really likable young man. They all are, gosh darnit.

My A Group for the night: Kat McPhee was the first true standout for me. Loved Taylor tonight, even his wild dancing. And Chris, though a bit flat in parts, really rocked the house. (But was it me or did the makeup crew go a bit overkill on all the contestants tonight? Chris looked downright airbrushed.)

B Group: Ace, Mandisa, Eliot, and Paris (who is grating on me, but girl can sang.)

C Group: Kellie, who I know people think she’s milking the naive thing, but I have a friend JUST like her and I swear to god, that’s not fake. So I find myself liking her, though I don’t think she’s that strong a singer, Bucky, Melissa — was I the only one who thought she wasn’t hitting it at all? I thought for sure they’d cut her to shreds, so color me surprised — Lisa, who is technically good, but I just feel removed from her performances. Not sure why, but she just doesn’t call to me, and last but not least, Kevin Covais, who has SO bought into his own press and seems painfully self unaware that all the sex symbol stuff is tongue in cheek. (I mean, he actually broke up with his longtime highschool girlfriend because he thought it would make him more “votable” if he was single. Please.)

And though I don’t always appreciate his delivery, especially to some of the younger contestants, I will admit here that 99% of the time, I agree with Simon. And I wish Paula would trade chairs with Randy again. They both contributed more cohesive advice in that reordered lineup.

Going home? Should be Kevin. Might be Melissa. (But I think the judges collective praise saved her.)

What do you say Blog Babes? Who did you vote for? Who should go home tonight?

  1. I can’t really comment on American Idol cause I don’t watch it.
I can comment on Mr. Sexiest Man Alive. I recently watched Two For the Money with him and Al Pacino. This didn’t have the typical him winning the girl at the end. I’m finding a lot more movies are doing this.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was just on the other day. Talking about him makes me want to watch Sahara(the only movie here with him)

  2. Sorry. Matthew is MINE.

  3. I want to see that movie!

    LOL on Jill’s comments above!

I was disappointed that Amazing Race was To Be Continued!! And YOUR Phil???

As for American Idol, I agree 100% with your A group: Kat, Chris, and Taylor. I could not believe the song Kevin chose to sing…”Part-time Lover”…I kind of felt like I was watching a little kid sing the song, which seemed just wrong considering the lyrics.

  4. I agree with you Donna about everything you said about the Idols!! My local news station in St. Louis reported at the after show media blitz and said whom they thought were fake in person and who were not. It’s sad that viewers have to watch some of these idols being fake b/c they are just being coached to talk the way the do. However, one of my pet peevs about the show is when the judges make fun of the idol for what they dress or the song they sing when I know that they were told to dress they way the did or sing a certain song(especially when there are limited songs in a category and the idols don’t want to repeat a song another idol is singing).

  5. I meant to say “what they WEAR” not dress :)

  6. THANK YOU, Jennifer, on the Kevin performance on Idol. I totally feel the same way. Not only did I think his song choice was inappropriate for his age, I didn’t think his voice fit the song at all. I admit he’s a cute kid but he seems to be getting a little big for his britches. I am in agreement with you, Donna, and Jennifer on the top performers. My absolute favorite last night was Kat although I enjoyed Chris and Taylor’s performances also.

  7. Yes, Jennifer, MY Phil. If I have to give Matthew to Jill, then it’s only fair. Who else appreciates the eyebrow porn as much as me, huh, huh?

Interesting to see we’re mostly in agreement on the Idol performances. I know tastes range widely, but it did seem the show ended on a much stronger note than it started on. Agreed on Kevin’s song choice in terms of appropriateness, too. (And I’m a big Eliot and Mandisa fan, so it’s not like I’m a biased Kat/Chris/Taylor fan. I really expected Mandisa to totally rock last night and she wasn’t as powerful as usual. Eliot’s song was kinda dull. I still say they were both singing in the wrong register. To low, not enough oomph.) Will be interesting to see who gets the boot tonight! I hope the fans don’t pull a John Stevens Vote and keep Kevin in. He made the final 12 and therefore the post show tour…that’s enough. LOL

  8. I just finished watching AI a little while ago actually. I taped it..

I agree with all of you on the performances, and I do think the show ended stronger than it started. I will say I am a big Taylor fan and I love Chris as well. I also enjoy watching Eliot and Mandisa perform, but last night wasn’t their best.

Well we’ll see who goes home tonight!

    Caitlin*

  9. don’t watch ai that much only last two. mm is cute.

  10. LOL on “eyebrow porn” Never thought of it that way before…he is pretty good looking! Love the accent too!
