Yesterday, what yesterday?
I know, no blog post yesterday. What was up with that? Some people lose an hour during daylight savings….I apparently lost an entire day. (It is too fair to blame it on a wrinkle in the universe.) Cool fact: very early this morning at two minutes and three seconds after 1am, there was an interesting phenomenon. At that moment, it was officially 01:02:03 on 04/05/06. I know, I can’t get a blog post done on time, but I managed to come up with that incredibly useful piece of information. Wrinkle in time, I’m telling you.
Okay…American Idol MAC: Country Music Night. 9 Idol Contestants left…who goes home next?
First off, what the hell happened to Kenny Rogers? Whoever that guy was sounded like Kenny, but he sure as heck didn’t look anything like him. Spooky. Secondly, cool to see Chris Rock and Whoopi in the house…but for country music night? Really? Lastly (okay, not really) Simon? If you don’t understand the music genre, then at least try to judge the actual singing content. Ryan? For the most part I like the way you try and keep the judges playing nicely in their little sandbox, but tonight you were almost a bit bitchy. The shadow was working for me, though. So, is the Teri Hatcher thing true? Because, if so, you go Teri, my fellow, single, forty-something sister! In praise of younger men, indeed.
I’m sorry, where was I again? Oh, right. The performances.
The good…
Kellie Pickler. Well, duh. But I liked the song she picked and thought she did a good job with it. I was also glad Ryan addressed the whole is-she-isn’t-she faking the dumb bumpkin thing. I didn’t think so. Nice to give her a chance to say so herself. I still like her. Sue me.
Eliot Yamin. I tend to agree with Simon regarding some relatively boring, safe song choices this week and last, but in terms of the performance, I thought he did a good job. And his looks are growing on me. Tonight I didn’t watch so much as listen (I’m such a multi-tasker) and he was listenable. (Unlike others to be named shortly.)
Chris Daughtry. Again, kinda boring, but he sang it well. I thought he put as much into it as he could. Not a rave, but also listenable.
Yes, believe it or not, Ace Gylenhaal. (I know I just mangled his last name. Sorry, I’m not looking it up. I only Google during business hours.) He actually did a really good job tonight. A few sharp notes, but all in all, really well done. Totally screws up my bottom three predictions, though.
Best of the night for me? Kat McPhee. She brought it, looked good while bringing it, and seemed actually comfortable in her own skin. And she didn’t wear some wacky dominatrix outfit. (And Paris? Just say no to that look, k?)
The passably entertaining….
Paris. Didn’t do much for me, but wasn’t horrible or anything. Just…meh for me.
Mandisa. Girl? You need to find your way back and fast. Again, she sings very well, but the fit was totally off for me tonight. Not bottom three material, but not the Mandisa I loved from earlier in the season. Where did you go?
Yeah, yeah…Bucky. (Notice I totally gave up on the whole last name thing. At least Mandisa made that less embarassing for me.) So…not bad in a general way, but the whole “enunciate” thing from Kenny and then, was it me or could you still not understand one line until the very last one? Just me? Okay then.
And bottom three material….
Taylor, Taylor, Taylor… Dude, what happened? It was like you totally gave up. Did your dog die or something? (And man, if something really bad did happen I will feel like such an unfeeling idiot.) But he totally phoned that in. From Outer Mongolia. Just….nothing there.
So there you have it. Yes, I am fully aware I have only one performer in the bottom three. That’s because I honestly don’t know who else I’d put there. I don’t think it should be Ace or Bucky this week - based on this week anyway - but that means putting Paris and Mandisa there and that’s just not right, either. Well, maybe Paris, but only because she’s wearing on me.
What do you all think? Who’s at risk? Who’s a shoo in to stay? (Besides Kellie.)
Until tomorrow…..(no, really. I promise.)

Donna,
I pretty much agree with you on all counts.
I normally love Taylor. But last night? Not so much. I did not feel anything when he sang that song, and from the sound of it, neither did he. It was not the song I would have chosen for his voice either.
The ones I usually feel are weaker singers (albeit nice kids), were among the best last night. I’m talking about Kellie, Ace, and Bucky. So yeah, that changes my bottom three as well.
Chris was good I thought. It may not have been his best, but it was pleasant and pretty. Yes, I said pretty and I’m sure he would hate that lol. Still, there it is.
Mandisa though I love her, should NEVER sing that song again. The song is a fun, cute song, but not right for her powerhouse voice.
Katherine was very good, and I liked that look on her too. Eliot was good, but not great. I’ll give him extra points for doing well completely outside his genre.
Paris, great voice, but I was just not feeling it last night.
So yeah, I think I am playing Paula. In other words, I just repeated everything you said lol. I just happen to agree. Great minds and all that I guess.
Bottom three: Paris (I don’t have the heart to put Taylor there, though he probably should be after last night.)Sorry, I can’t think of anyone else I would put there either. The underdogs surprised me last night.
Ryan and Teri huh? So she’s not so desperate after all. I kind of figured that anyway, just look at the woman. Ugh, I’m going to go eat some celery and do some crunches now. Watch out Teri! Lol.
The phenomenon of the date and time is truly that since it will never happen again!
Last I heard Teri was with George Clooney? so its very interesting.
I havn’t watched the show yet,I taped it but figured Bucky and Kelly would do great. I think there should be a guest judge during any country nights to replace Simon because he doesn’t like country and can’t be fair.
I watched last night, but considering that country music is what I listen to, I was disappointed.
Mandisa is usually my favorite, but although the attitude of the song was right on, she does not have the voice for country. I love her, but it wasn’t her best night.
I did really enjoy Paris’ song. I was surprised that she could find a country song and really let go. She was my pick of the night.
Kellie and Bucky were kind of shoe-ins. I would have been surprised if either of them had messed up too badly. Although, I have to say, Kellie picked a song about a hooker and that kind of bothered me. Maybe she didn’t catch the implications in the lyrics, but I bet there are a lot of dirty old men out there who did.
Eliot, Chris and Katharine really impressed me. I was expecting them to bomb, but none did. Ace is really wearing on me. I know he can use the falsetto, but just for once, I’d like to hear him actually sing a song all the way through without resorting to the gimmick. And, Taylor, Taylor, Taylor, I love him, I do, but last night wasn’t a good one for him.
I guess I would put Ace and Taylor in the bottom three, but I don’t know who else. Since I couldn’t get through last night to vote, my opinion probably doesn’t count anyway!
I was a bit disappointed last night too. I agree that Ryan was horrible last night and got on my nerves…of course he tends to get on my nerves a lot of the time.
As for the contestants, Ace (whose last name according the AI site and the show last night is Young) did surprisingly well. That is one of my favorite songs and I think he sang it okay. Overall though…well…I was totally underwhelmed by all of the performances. Nothing “Wowed Me!” I think that some made some bad song choices. As a country music fan, I know that there were a lot more songs that they(Taylor, Mandisa, Paris, Kat are the main one I am thinking of) could have done better.
That will happen again, in 3006. Like I’ll be around to see it(NOT)
Man, now reading all your comments, it makes me wish I had watched my tape when I got home from work last night. (I had to watch General Hospital instead — my guys there get priority.
) Now I will have to rush home and watch after work.
I don’t want to see Taylor in the bottom three either, but he needs to get back to being spaztastic Taylor. One time standing still singing was enough. Now we know he can, I want to see him dancing and all that energy again. I was hoping for some old Charley Pride or something bluesy and a bit raw. I get John Denver. The Barry Manilow of country music. Sigh.
Bottom three could be almost anyone - I’m thinking Paris, Ace, and Taylor, even tho Ace deserves a bye for last night. I’d rather it be Ace, Paris, and Bucky (I know, I know, he’s adorable, but still)but he was too good last night to be in jeopardy I think.
What is the theme next week, anybody know?
Just saw this on the American Idol site on the News page:
“Then, on Tuesday, April 11th, the Top 8 Contestants will take on the music of the legendary Rock Band, QUEEN”
Hmm…should be interesting unless they change their mind.
QUEEN? Are they trying to kill us? (I mean, honestly, Bucky doing Freddie Mercury?????) I LOVE Queen, but could they have chosen a more difficult catalog of songs to contend with? Wasn’t it enough we made it through Constantine doing Queen last season and then Mig and Suzy in Rock Star: INXS last summer? At least on Rock Star, they pulled it off, because, you know, they were ROCK SINGERS. But American Idol contestants? I shudder to think how Simon will react to that.
Last season, I was already downloading songs by a couple of the contestants, into my iPod, weekly. This year? I’m barely motivated to vote. None of the songs have prompted me to Google. I’m thinkng next week isn’t gonna be any different. LOL
Maybe they’ll surprise me.
As a country music lover, none of the contestants sang it convincingly. I am predicting that Katherine McPhee or Ace will win it based on the public voting- they are cute and look like a star even tho I think some of the others have better singing voices. And Bucky, you’re the next to go
QUEEN!?? You are kidding! lol
Sweet little Kellie singing: “We will we will ROCK YOU!”
*snicker*
Queen is am amazing band that had many hits but the big ones really won’t showcase the idols voices so I have a feeling there will be a few songs sang that many viewers will never have heard of unless your a huge Queen fan. My brother had a lot of their albums when we were teenagers and there are a few songs I can remember that are good and hope the idols sing them.
