Threesomes on Dancing with the Stars? Why, yes. And we like it!

Show of hands. How many of you loved last night’s show? ME! Dancing With the Stars is heading into its last two weeks of competition — with a double elimination tonight! Eeek!! — and the competitors are really stepping up their game. So are the show’s producers, by adding another new twist: Threesomes!

Okay, okay, so they called it “Trio Dancing.” But if I’m dancing with Maks AND Val Chmerkovskiy at the same time? I’m calling it a threesome. Just sayin!

And you know what? They all worked! I had some serious doubts going in as to how that was all going to work out, especially when some of the teams decided to team up with troupe members, but I enjoyed them all. If Randy Jackson were on the panel, he’d have said they were all (say it with me now) “In it to win it!!”

There were still a few missteps last night, both in the dancing, the costuming, and yikes, some of the music…and Len…well, we’ll get to that in a moment. The scoring was just all over the damn place. With ten’s being thrown out like so much confetti to some teams, and miserly scores doled out to others, often times without a whole lot of sense. (Because, honestly, Melissa did a much better job last night in comparison to her former dances, but in no way did hers and Donald’s performances deserve the same score. Seriously, judges?)

Okay, so let’s get down to it! Each of the six remaining teams danced a ballroom number as a duo, then a latin number as a trio. They were allowed to choose either a pro who had already been eliminated from the competition, or one of the troupe members. There was a smattering of each. They were judged on how well they incorporated the pro into the routine to highlight the celeb contestant. That said….some of the choices were confusing. At first. Read on…

First up for the evening were Donald and Peta. Now, I don’t know what this man has to do to earn a perfect score, or more 10’s consistently, because, if you compare his performances to the others who are garnering 10’s, then it doesn’t make much sense. Their ballroom number was a tango, and they danced it beautifully, and with a lot of energy and emotion, and even the judges were all glittery and happy about it…but? 9’s across the board for a 27. Which, while good, and the team was happy, didn’t seem to jibe with the comments made, and certainly not when you saw the performances they threw 10’s at later on in the show.

But it was really embarrassingly obvious when Donald and Peta brought in Karina as their pro for the Trio Dance, the jive and they killed it. And I mean? Killed. It. That? Was a crazy high energy routine with lots of difficulty, and they expected Donald to keep up with two of the most technically proficient, over-the-top performers of the pro group….and he did! Even as I was watching it (the first time) I was thinking “this is going down as an all time classic.” And that ending, when he jumped over both Peta’s and Karina’s heads? Are you kidding me? That was awesome! The judges made a little quibble about them being off in timing a bit early on, but they also seemed to really enjoy it. I was expecting a 30, I really was, because it was crazy good and the crowd went nuts. Yeah. Not so much. They got one 10 and two 9’s for a 28. Again - that’s a great score, but it wasn’t in keeping with what happened on the dance floor. (And yes, there were timing issues, but every trio had them, judges commented on it every time….and some of them got 10’s. Just sayin. Again.) So, while he had a good night, and relatively high scores, I honestly felt he was robbed. They ended up with a 55 out of 60 and it should have been in the 58-60 range on the night.

Second pair of the evening were Maria & Derek. You get to see more of the behind the scenes behavior of Derek being incredibly hard on Maria. I don’t know why his doesn’t come off as jerky as Maks’ - it should - but you can sense his frustration as well as his true respect for his partner. (Whereas with Maks…notsomuch on the latter.) Still, it was awkward and uncomfortable, and I don’t care what you say, being mean to someone just to get a better performance out of them? Not justified. Never justified. Maybe I’m just fatigued with watching the male half of competing teams being complete jackasses to their female counterparts….and the females apologizing for it. (Dave. Rachel.) But, you know, it’s a family show, and those? Ain’t family values. So…anyway….we get to the actual dance, which is a very lovely Viennese Waltz. I thought the mood and tone of the dance was evocative and truly touching, and these two do seem to have a significant amount of honest chemistry between them. I did not get the dress-made-of-soot for Maria (yes, it was supposed to be moody and ethereal, but those colors just looked dead and awful) and the music was not what it could have been for such an emotional performance. But I thought they danced it beautifully. So did Carrie Ann…and so did Bruno. It was hard not to be touched by it.

Unless, of course, you’re Len. Who literally brought the wrath of the audience, and Carrie Ann, down on his head by not just not liking it, but trashing it. What the hell dance was he watching? I was really stunned. As was pretty much everyone else. And an already tearful Maria just kind of stood there, deer in headlights, while the whole mood shifted to one of “let’s lynch Len.” It was horrible. And it didn’t improve any when CA gives them a 10, Bruno a 9, and Len….and 8. Are you kidding me? Given the numbers being tossed out, that was no 8. On any scale, any day, no matter how much of a jerk Derek was in rehearsal. Just….wow. And you’ve heard the crowd boo before, but never–never–like they did that. It was so intense, that Carrie Ann and Len pretty much stopped speaking to each other shortly after that and were clearly at odds all night long. So, a 27 to start.

And…yeah. Later, after Len had lightened up a wee bit - here and there - Derek and Maria are back with their Trio Dance. They get one of the troupe guys to join them, and being as he was similar in size to Derek, it made sense. Maria sure enjoyed it! And for all the angst and difficulty of rehearsal for their earlier number, this seemed all happiness and joy. They opted to bring a Bollywood vibe to their samba (and the music was just atrocious - a rap number? For samba?) Heck, I’m glad they livened it up with some kind of vibe because a straight samba to that atrocity of music would have been impossible. In keeping with the trio spirit, I thought it was fun, lively, showcased Maria all over the place, and was, generally, a real feel good piece of choreo. Was it remotely a classic samba? Not even. But did you care? Hell no. Well, Len surely did. He gave it a 7. Yes. S-E-V-E-N. Yes, I know he’s a fussy gus and likes things classic, but….7? And the crowd? Goes ballistic. Tom tries to salvage it by saying “Hey, they got two 9’s and a mood swing!” and Derek and Maria took the whole thing with good grace and laughed it off (because you just have to at that point) but wow. Talk about buzz kill. So, a 25 for that, for a total on the night of 52 out of 60. Yikes!

This is definitely leaving the door open for some of the bottom of the pack dancers to shine (and, again, why Donald’s scores were not on par, comparatively speaking. Because if Derek/Maria are getting 7/8’s, Donald deserved a 10+ from Len.)

Up next, and taking advantage of the all-over-the-place scoring, is Melissa and Maks. We get treated to another harshly abusive rehearsal session, where Melissa is clearly over it, over Maks, over the whole of it. It’s only because she wants to compete better, for her own sense of competition, that I think she stuck it out. She very succinctly, and without any undo dramatics, lays the ball of “how you’re perceived” blame squarely where it belongs, which is entirely on Maks, then proceeds to essentially say “f*ck it” and goes out and dances - easily - the best she ever has. It was a playful Foxtrot that put her in the femme fatale role, so, for once, she didn’t look like the scared rabbit, racing to keep up with Maks. She came off as in control and confident, and it made the world of difference. (And, I swore right then if Maks said, a la Derek, that was his goal, to push her until she broke so she’d get out of her head on the dance floor, I’d have gone and kicked his ass. Thankfully, he did not. He apologized. But then…he’s done that before, too.) I don’t know who dressed Melissa for that dance - it was horrifyingly unattractive, from the gappy waist to the deep vee exposing saggy boobs - but she danced like she didn’t give a rat’s ass, and she definitely needs to keep that attitude. The judges also commended her performance, and gave her 8’s across the board for a 24. Which I thought was fair and accurate, as she did dance the best she’s danced, but that’s not to say she danced as well as the others. (So, again, this puts the glare on Donald’s exceedingly better performance, which was only worth one point more? Really? And Derek & Maria - who also got an 8 for a dance that was, in every possible way, better than their Foxtrot. So….whatevs. I give up trying to make sense of it.)

For their Trio Dance, they bring in Maks’ brother Val, the nice Chmerkovskiy, and you really see Melissa blossom when someone with a little compassion and fun attitude has a hand in things. Their samba was sexy, fun, playful - and both the outfit she started in, and the one they strip her to, were SO flattering! FINALLY! It wasn’t the most technically proficient execution, but the playfulness, the fun they all obviously were having with each other, and getting to see Melissa blossom a little bit and come into her own, made it thoroughly enjoyable. And the judges rewarded them accordingly, with a 27. Was that high for the technical execution? Oh, clearly. But I didn’t quibble so much, just because she’d gone through so much and was so clearly tickled with it, it was worth the overscore.

I should add here that Brooke actually did some hard hitting interviews with some of the teams tonight. Quelle shock! She pinned both Derek and Maks to the wall over their behavior in rehearsal and made them both (rightfully) squirm. One of the first times I can ever recall thinking “You go, girl!” About Brooke. I know.

Okay, we get Mark and Katherine next. She’s so cute and quaintly, sincerely humble, I continue to love her. It was a nice contrast to watch their rehearsals, even though they really struggled with certain elements, but to see it handled in a more professional way. And I don’t even like Mark. They did a Viennese Waltz and I loved her Cinderella dress and her elegant Cinderella hair, it was all so very lovely - until he flipped her into that spin thing at the end, which - Len, gasp, was right, was really out of character with the loveliness of the rest of the dance. You don’t always have to have crazy ass moves to win, Mark. It was the only time I agreed with Grouchy Len, but the other judges felt that way, too. It was jarring, really. Though she did kind of pull it off. The crowd was having none of it, though, and almost came unglued at the unhappy comments. It was obviously just residual anger over the earlier trash talk, so I get it…but wow, what an emotional night! They get a 26, because Carrie Ann gives it an 8. Really?? Sorry, that move might have been jarring, but that was no 8 performance. Like I said, down was up, up was down, dogs and cats, living together….it was a crazy night.

For their trio dance, they bring in Tristan! Yay!! The Irishman and the Welsh lass. And, wow, immediately I found myself wishing they’d been paired together all season long. How adorable and lovely were they? See ya Mark! I thought their cha cha was fun, but was worried they planned to leave her in that suit. And…maybe they should have, as when they tried to pull it off of her, one trouser leg stuck, pooled around her ankle. I was all “please don’t trip, please don’t trip” because she just kept dancing. And the first chance she had, she kicked it off, as part of the dance - and, wow, she earned major props from me just for handling that snafu with such aplomb! It wasn’t my favorite trio dance of the night, actually was more towards the bottom, entertainment wise - the pants leg thing being the best part. Well, that and that the handcuffs she puts on Mark and Tristan at the end that seemed to have no key with it to free them again. Ha! For their efforts, they get a 27. And, see…again, here’s where Donald’s routine was just miles and eons better, bigger, brighter…so, yeah. I don’t get it. Your mileage may vary. I did love her and Tristan together, so that was fun!

Now on to the highlight of the night, for me. No, not Cheryl and William - not yet! No, the surprise of the night was Chelsie and Roshon. Now, here’s a kid (a kid, remember) who has been in the bottom 2 or 3 on results night like, every week, it seems, and has fought his way out two weeks in a row, so does he give up? Whine, or mope, or…..anything negative? No. He works that much harder. Much respect to this kid. And to his pro, who pushes him, but, once again, their rehearsals seem tough, challenging, but ultimately professional. I adored that Chelsie brought both of Roshon’s incredibly adorable grandmas to the studio to watch them rehearse and give him motivation. How much did you love them? And the one grandma actually critiquing his footwork? HA! Loved that. Then they go out and perform the most delightfully engaging, joyful little fox trot ever, and it was just such a nice respite after all the rehearsal drama and judge drama and crowd emotion, etc. I loved it, the judges loved it, the crowd loved it, and, best of all, his grandmas’ loved it! Great moment on the night. They get a very, very well deserved 29. I’d have gone the 30, just because.

On their trio dance, they get a paso doble, so I was worried, as Roshon isn’t the most manly of builds with his angular, long limbed teenage body. Chelsie brought in a troupe guy, Sasha, who I ended up loving. He really worked so well to help Roshon out, and they ended up mirroring each other really, really well. I was a little worried, when they started the dance, that the middle part was too much of just Roshon and Chelsie, but it worked out really well in the end. The judges call them for being out of sync at the end, which I hardly noticed, so they didn’t get the perfect score - they got a very decent 27 - but, on the night, by far the feel good story. Loved them! I hope this helps to keep him in, but with it being a double elimination, after Melissa….then who else? I really don’t know!

And, finally, the show closes (again) with William and Cheryl. Yes, I know, I know, they save him till last a lot of the time, and Donald gets robbed going first. I agree about all of that. Except…if I were a producer? I’d save William, too. I just think I’d plunk Donald and his crazy good body in the general vicinity of that place, too. So, they come out first with a Foxtrot that was fun, playful, classy and sexy. William in tux and tails is a sight to behold. I kept thinking how gorgeous he would have looked with Katherine’s Cinderella dress and hair - except he’s ridiculously tall, and she…is not. Still, this was beautifully executed and playful - to Stray Cat Strut, of all things! and I really liked it! Was it really a 30? I don’t know…. But that’s what they got!

On their trio dance, Cheryl surprises me by bringing in another guy - Tony. Now, did she just not want to share William with a female pro? I dunno. I wasn’t sure if putting him up against a male pro was a good idea, but, in the end, she handled it much as Chelsie did, in the choreo, and it was great fun. They had a paso doble (to music that even made sense) and, while not technically perfect, having him play Zorro worked for me! They get a 27, and I’m okay with that, but again…go back now, that all the trio dances have been done, and watch Donald, Peta and Karina again…and tell me that’s not a 30 right there.

So, crazy night, but also crazy fun. I loved how the trio thing all worked out and felt that the fun energy of it all really helped take the edge off the two-dance-week tension. It was certainly more entertaining than watching them simply do to dances together. I hope they keep this in for future seasons.

On the night, William & Cheryl top the leader board, with Chelsie/Roshon right behind them. Donald/Peta & Mark/Katherine are in the middle, with Derek/Maria & Melissa/Maks at the bottom. So…how will this play out? I think Melissa earned herself a lot of points this week, for dancing better, and for how she handled the whole issue with Maks’ rehearsal behavior. She’s got a strong fan base, so I don’t know that she’s out tonight, even though she’s the weakest remaining dancer. Roshon really, really earned his way in this week, but I fear for him, too. Because if it’s not him, then who? Maria? I don’t know about that. I think William, Donald, and Katherine are safe. But what if people scramble to save the bottom feeders and unwittingly leave their favorites vulnerable?

All I can say is….I’ll be tuning in!! However, it has to be said…that with weeks now of showing the female celebs being berated and sworn at by their male pros, which really puts a blight on this family show, in my eyes…why in name of all that is sequiny happiness would you bring Chris Brown, of all singers, back on this show? Wasn’t the backlash last time enough? Isn’t there ANYone else out there who can drop by and sing us tune but this guy? Haven’t we seen that he hasn’t learned anything about appropriate behavior? Just…wow, show. You lose major respect for that move. I’ll be fastforwarding through every second of that. Yikes. And double yikes.

So…your turn Blog Babes! What say you? Were you surprised by Grumpy Len’s scores, then wildly exuberant joy mood swings? Do you think Roshon escapes elimination? What did you think of Melissa this week? What was your favorite routine of the night? Who stays? Who wins? Who goes home?? DISH!

Amazing Finale? Yes! But the Amazing Race racers? Umm. Not so much.

So, I’ll just get this off my chest straight away. I really loved the final two legs of Amazing Race, where the teams went, what they had to do. It was both thrilling and exhausting to watch. What I didn’t love? The people who were actually doing all of that. I’ve never fast forwarded through so much of this show’s finale ever. So, kudos race course developers, you did an outstanding job all season long. Casting crew? Yeah, not so much. Please, no more stunt casting from other shows. They’ve had their five minutes, and we were sick of them the first time around. And please, for the love of all that is amazing, cast some folks we actually like and can root for.

Other than Team Kentucky, it was slim pickens this season. It was so bad last night, I was actually rooting for Team Border Patrol to win - not because I remotely wanted them to, but just so they could snatch victory from the jaws of Team Army Aggro & Spouse. (Oh, excuse me. He doesn’t call her his wife or his spouse, or, god forbid, his better half. Even though she was his better 99%. He goes out of his way not to call her his wife. Instead he calls her his “Partner. Life partner. Teammate.” And what did she reference herself as? His soldier.

Yeah. It’s like that.

So, I waited to write this recap (such as it is) until I read an interview today with the winners….who, yes, were the ever exhausting and always annoying Team Aggro Army. Yes. Mr & Mrs Smug won. Now, they earned it, I’ll give them that. Rachel was like a warrior out there, and I would have liked her, except her constant calling out of Dave (who I wanted to knee pretty much every time he opened his mouth - and I’m not a fighter!) also got to be a bit harpy and shrill, to where I couldn’t stand to listen to either one of them. And then they proclaimed, on the Amazing Bathmat of Win (the second time they got there - this had to be the most mistakes made by all teams in the final leg ever), that the race brought them closer. Wha? My immediate thought “Closer to divorce maybe…”

But no, they thought it was all just sooo good for them. Really? Because it was a painful, nagging, bickering hell for the rest of us! So, I was curious to see how they would respond to the sure-to-be-asked questions about Dave’s obnoxious behavior and Rachel’s passive aggressive continual bicker stream response. Would watching their dysfunctional relationship, played out for all the world to see, make a light bulb of any kind go off? Are they in counseling? Were they, at least, embarrassed? Was Dave even an iota remorseful?

Why, no, of course not! Dave even went so far as to say that what we saw might have looked like bickering and sounded like bickering, but, to them, it’s the way “we challenge each other.” His words. Really, Dave?? He feels that the constant nagging and complaining and outright name calling is the way they push each other to excel and be better people. (I’m not even making that up, and I write fiction for a living.) He claims that’s why they were so good and why they won. He not only sees no problem with it, he embraces his behavior.

Just…wow. Words fail. But hey, I’ve decided to look at it this way, if it works for the two of them and makes them happy? Then it keeps them off the streets and from trying to have a relationship with any of the rest of us. But I sure as hell hope no one is taking relationship advice from watching either one of them. Because you call it challenging, Dave. I call it controlling and freakishly abusive.

Please fix my show, Phil. Please bring me a season where I can root for folks who treat each other decently and make the race fun again. I’m begging. In fact, just call me. I’ll do the race. No, really.

Okay…so let’s move on to the happy, shiny show, where we like the folks who are participating! Yes, it’s DWTS Night!! YAY!! I’ve never been so happy to see a room full of sequins and spandex in all my life.

And, you know what? Having watched it all now and having had SUCH a great time…I’m going to toss the above up on the blog now and separate the ugly from the stunning that was tonight’s show. It deserves it’s own sparkly and fun review. (Okay, so I have a few choice words for Uncle Lenny...but otherwise!)

This week topped Motown Night for me. Great fun! And wow, the competition is so fierce! Even Half Pint brought it this week. (I would have too, if I got a Chmerkovskiy sandwich!)

Tune in tomorrow for the full Morning After Commentary .… I’m off to rewatch some of the highlights!

Idol Results…there are no surprises left to surprise.

So, as we wind down this season of American Idol, I think the final contestants on this season are each so talented in their own way, that if they’re going to get a record deal, they’ve already cemented that. So, who wins and who goes home in what order, at this point, is really kind of moot. In fact, I’d argue that the runners-up often have more latitude with what they can do, career-wise, than the winner, who is locked into the Idol machine for a long time. (Winner Kris Allen vs runner up Adam Lambert, as an example.) That said, I like some of the remaining contestants better than the others, but I don’t have any actual favorite, so…easy for me to say.

I do wonder if any of them, even as talented as they are, will do huge things. Lee DeWyze never really put much together, post Idol. (Although I’d argue that Crystal Bowersox’s life has changed, with better concert tours, some television acting roles, etc… She definitely has bigger name recognition now.) Same for Kris Allen in the post-Idol slump. (Although, again, runner up, Lambert’s life skyrocketed to global sensation. Rate him however you want, but the guy is living his dream, for sure.) Scotty McCreery seems to be doing okay, but Lauren Alaina (runner up) is less heard from. It just seems that the earlier seasons produced a broader base of kids that went on to do Big Things, even if not superstardom in singing, more of their lives have changed with careers on Broadway, in movies, and in other successful ways than it seems happens down the runner up line in recent seasons.

Jimmy’s comments were, as usual, a bit strong at times, but I think the kids are a bit numb to it by now. Plus, after seeing Little Steven riff on him in mentor sessions last week, I think they see him a bit more humanly than before. I didn’t feel as bad for the them this week, and they didn’t seem too broken up about it, either. I did agree with him that, based on the performances, it should have been Phil2 and Jessica in the bottom. He also didn’t think they actually would be…and he was right. Joshua and Phil2 were spared, as I figured they would be. I’d hoped it would be Jessica in danger, but, instead, we got a Hollie/Skylar Bottom 2.

Both had been there before, so it was a 50/50 shot….but, in the end, Skylar goes home. Of the two, Skylar is infinitely more immediately marketable, so, not tragic for her, she’ll easily land a deal, but something of a head scratcher, voter-wise. And that’s not to say I wasn’t happy for Hollie. I like her a lot and have enjoyed seeing her star rise, albeit a bit late in the season.

The only thing that truly surprised me last night - well, beyond the fact that Carrie Underwood looked great but her song sounded all kinds of rough, and that I enjoyed and actually watched Coldplay, both times! - was at the end of the show, when Skylar was doing her sing out. I loved her sing out, as sing outs go. She really gave it a hardcore, energy filled, true performer performance, proving, really, that she’ll be fine, just fine. But given how the judges always praise and gush over her high energy, and generally seemed to really like her a lot, they looked distinctly unimpressed or just not even all that interested, in her final performance. At best they were more or less paying attention, but there was no real enthusiasm, much less any actual rocking out, which, given how lively and up tempo the song was, didn’t make any sense. I noticed it especially with Jennifer. It almost bordered on rude.

So….what was up with that? Why didn’t they celebrate with her? It was weird. I was reading some backstage interviews about the after-show, and there were comments made from folks in the audience that when the taping stopped, JLo didn’t even really talk to Skylar, just exited the stage. (Steven and Randy, however, took the time to talk to her and say encouraging things, as the judges tend to do every week.)

Anyway…just a bit of a buzz kill. I’m not sad for any of them leaving at this point, but after all the energy invested in them by the judges, the least you can do is show proper support and encouragement as they exit. Jennifer.

What say you, Blog Babes? Surprised? Do you have a favorite at this point? Jimmy alluded to how ill Phil2 apparently really is. Are you surprised that hasn’t been played up more? And…who wins? Who do you want to win? I say Phil2 wins unless he collapses. Who do I want to win? From this final 4…I don’t really care. To be honest, I was more excited by seeing commercials for the return of Master Chef and So You Think You Can Dance! What about you? DISH!

Idol & Little Steven Van Zandt…Best Marriage Ever.

I loves me some Little Steven, but after tonight? I’d have his children. (Hey, I’m 52, I can get away with saying stuff like that now. It’s a perk.) But whatever swagger and constant smackdown he brought to the mentor room on American Idol this week, totally got the remaining contestants buzzed and feeling their own juice. His comment, straight up, that if they’re worried about entertaining, they’re dead, and to just go out there and sing the damn song the way they hear it, and let us be entertained by who they are? Golden.

I also think the contestants seeing him giving his very close friend, Jimmy Iovine, a constant stream of grief, throughout the process, made them realize that he’s not such a big, scary dude after all. (Okay, okay, little scary dude. But you know what I mean.) It was exactly the right time to have him mentor. I was hoping, after seeing him in the audience last week with Jimmy that we’d have a shot at it.

So, this week, Round 1 is songs from the 60’s. Round 2 is British Pop. After last week, I’m not sayin’ nuthin’ about them singing current stuff no mo. I’ll just keep my hopes high that it’s entertaining and leave it at that.

Hollie is first up, which worries me, it’s the doom slot, but she tackles River Deep, Mountain High, which I absolutely love, and with the big production that goes with it, she completely gets the job done. Normally I type and watch, but I found myself continuing to look up at the screen, because it sounded great. And you know what? It looked great, too. The kids are styling themselves (or being styled) much, much better (sorry, Tommy) so she looked fantastic and put some heat in it. Having a longer song to really style it better helps a lot, too. The judges all loved it, so I hope Ryan is right and that her second song is up there with this one.

Phil2is next, doing a completely made over The Letter. Jimmy tries to pooh pooh the big change up Phil wants to do to it, but Little Steven is having none of that, and totally shuts him down, hilariously, (”That’s how he hears it. Do you watch this show?”) which totally cracks Phil up, but also seems to give him the confidence to stick with it (not that he wouldn’t anyway) but that added element of confidence, after a shaky week, I think, really gave him a much needed energy boost. It’s like, they can just blame Stevie if it all goes horribly wrong, they have a pass this week, to just go for what they want to do. And, when Phil hits the stage, oh, it’s a different version all right, but he’s clearly having a far, far better time jamming out this week than he’s had in a few of them, and that’s truly infectious. He’s very hit or miss for me as a singer, but I found myself really enjoying this performance. The band jamming on stage with him is great, and is a big part of that. The audience went huge for it. Judges - Lots of discussion. Randy enjoyed it. JLo had never heard the original (I bet if she did hear the original now, she’d be all “OH! That song!” Because Phil’s version? Nothing like that.) Steven missed having the melody, but loved that he pulls it off anyway. And I actually agree with that - the audience wants/needs that hook so we can kind of groove along, but the band was so jamming, and Phil was having such a great time, you go along for the ride anyway.

Then Ryan cracks Phil up (and crushes the dreams of thousands of young women everywhere) by announcing that his home life survived his gf, Juliette Hough’s, crush on Phil, as Ryan discovered Phil has a gf already and she is in attendance. And? She’s a brunette. Cute. Had to be there. Anyway - his gf is a lot more Mary Ann than Ginger, so my Phil Approval Rating just went up another notch.

Then it’s Skylar in the mentor session with her choice, Knock on Wood, which you’d think, given her energizer bunny-ness, would be a good fit. For the first time tonight, LIttle Steven is shaking his head no, not so much. And, I agree. So, they listen to a bunch of songs, and settle on CCR’s Fortunate Son, which you’re pretty sure she’s never heard of (band, or song), but THAT? Stroke of genius. Even her standing there singing it first time in rehearsal sounded good. So…my question is, can we have Jimmy and Little Steven pair up every week? They bounce off each other really well. Because Jimmy is wearing his producer’s hat all the time, and forgets the musician part, and feeding their souls. Stevie does that beautifully. With her Bottom 3 placement last week, this one is crucial. Not sure on the hair, but the outfit is good! She doesn’t have quite the production as the others, but she has what she needs. However, I’ll be honest with you, it’s coming out all at the same level, which is at the top of the range, so there’s not a lot of depth behind the power. So…while the energy is great, I don’t think this is going to help. Of course, I thought last week her performances would bring her votes and clearly, not so much. What did you think? I think her second song needs to be better than this. Judges loved it….so, see? Mebbe just me, then. I do agree that she packs a punch, but that sounded kind of screamy instead of rich. (Also, Skylar? Either call them CCR or Creedence Clearwater Revival. Just Creedence Clearwater is like calling them Earth, Wind, or Three Dog. It’s just wrong.)

I am thinking, okay, who else is left, and I smile as I realize that I don’t have to watch pouty face this week. And, for all Elise blamed her natural facial structure as the reason folks thought she was kind of a sullen snot…well, no one, and I mean no one, has a more ingrained, genetic stank face than Little Steven. And yet….he comes across as charming and hilarious. So…just sayin’ Elise. Just sayin.

As it happens, we still have the J’s left, with Joshua up first. Only, he’s singing a duet with Phil? Did I miss the part about them singing duets tonight? Because boooo! Just let them sing and get votes. Save duets and such for results night when ti doeesn’t matter, because duets? Don’t matter! Alas, we’re getting duets. And..Phil & Joshua? Yeah, that’ll be….interesting. Ryan does a short Q&A, and one thing I do love about Phil is his humor. I think that’s why he and HeeJun bonded. I’m glad a little of HeeJun Dry Humor lingers onward in Phil. So, they’re deadpanning (i hope!) about how much they’re dreading this, and …I can kind of get that. Then Joshua says they’re singing a song they dont’ know and what is it? RIghteous Brother’s You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling. Okay, so first J Lo doesn’t know The Letter and now this? I am officially old as dirt. Secondly…wow, awkward song for a pair of dudes. Yes, I know the Righteous Bro’s are a pair of dudes, but it’s just…different, when you don’t know the song and have to duet it on stage together and with someone whose style couldn’t be further from your own. One, two, three….awkward!!

So, how is it? Well, first off, we get the revelation that Phil can actually sing. No, really. Like, in a smooth voice without growling. And, it’s kind of hot. Joshua can sing the hell out of this if he wants, which I’d like to hear him do, but he’d totally steamroll over Phil’s far, far quieter sound. So…hmm…. I like them separately on this, but kind of cringing about what’s coming when they have to sing together…. And it’s, well, it’s vanilla. Because Phil is actually singing to match any kind of tune that Joshua would sing, and Joshua has toned down his power almost entirely…so what’s left is really….vanilla. A shame, because I’d like to hear them sing it in their own styles. This? Is way not that. The ending was fun, and Phil was clearly just thinking it was as hilarious as it was, all the way through. Better than a stank face! Judges...totally cracked up, and enjoyed it for what it was. It did turn out to be fun. (Maybe Phil’s so lively and happy because the gf is there! She needs to show up every week!)

Also - it continues to kill me how all the other contestants are just styled to the nth degree every week, but Phil? Yeah, cleans his garage, drops by to sing a little, then heads out to change the oil in his car, maybe mow the grass. Never has to change his clothes. The all purpose wardrobe. That’s Phil. And, I gotta say, I love that about him.

Ooooh, now we get Little Steven mentoring Jessica. I’m all about this. She’s tackling Proud Mary. Little Steven tells her “That’s one of the songs all bar bands had to do, so…we hate it.” Jessica gets that deer in headlights look, then Steven laughs. Honestly, his children, I would have. Just for that. Adore him. He tries to talk her out of it, but he realizes she can sing the crap out f anything, so then he tells the band to change the tempo from one-four to one-seven and Jessica? Yeah, she has no clue what that is. The hilarity, it continues with him. But slowing it down was great, allowed her to put some soul in it instead of just screaming it out a la Skylar tonight. And as much as she can do at this point to garner interest, she does. One thing about her that always cracks me up - she doesn’t look 16, and has a little body that’s perfect and sexy (for her age), so every time she breaks out the singing-in-front-of-the-bedroom-mirror choreo moves? Totally cracks me up. Because I forget. She looks all kinds of a lot older in the skin tight bandage dress she has on tonight, but then she does these elementary school Tina Turner hip roll-step to the side things, and I just die. Laughing. Oh honey. You wouldn’t know how to channel Tina if you were twice your age, but you definitely don’t have that in you now. So that….was really awkward to watch. It’s not about her singing, of course, it never is. Girl can sing. But her performance? That was a whole lot of highschool awkward. Because, again, I’m old as dirt, and I’ve seen Tina do this. Jessica, honey, sweetie. Listen to Little Steven next time, mkay? Judges: JLo forgets she’s 16. Me, not so much. Stevie loved it, and had specifics on why, but you know he was watching her legs. Me and Randy? On the same page, as it happens. For exactly the same reason. Not the singing, the performance.

Joshua is tackling Ain’t To Proud Beg, and Steven is all cool with that, and he and Jimmy turn into his background dancers (yes, dancers, not singers.) Total hoot! Joshua agrees, says it was his most fun mentor session yet. I’m all about wanting to hate his striped cruise director jacket tonight, but….with the background singers and the way he works the performance, yeah, I’m kay. Needs a different shirt though. Fortunately, his style suits this kind of thing perfectly. It’s all Joshua all over the place, though he does manage to reel it in from going over the cliff bombastic. Judges: Copious drooling and gushing. Randy compares him to Terence Trent D’Arby. I love TTD! But…I have lots of TTD on my iPod. Joshua? Not yet.

Round 1 is over. All three give Joshua and Hollie the win, though two mention Skylar also. Round 2 is up!

Hollie is up with Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis - so, it’s good to hear it doesn’t have to be Brit Invasion music, but any Brit music from across the ages. I think she can do a nice job with this one. She’s worried the audience won’t connect with it, but it was a big hit here, too. And, being British herself, (albeit raised in Texas) I think Hollie will do right by this. Steven gives her great advice, to sing the song to one person, and not the whole world. I always remember So You Think You Can Dance when I hear this song. She does a good job, but I don’t think it did what Round 1 did for her. The staging and generic “movie soundtrack” music didn’t lend it much, either. So it was just her voice, as always, which is powerful, but I think the whole package helps her. I kept thinking if they paired it down to just a simple piano, it would have been quietly beautiful. It ended well. Judges loved. So, that’s good. And I really loved that they gave her madd props tonight for her self confidence. Because I want her to stay. In the battle between the teens, I want Jessica to go.

Phil goes with Time of the Season. Now, one of my favorite versions of this was Blake’s beat box version in…whatever season that was. Now, it might not sound all that freaky that I remember that, but trust me, I don’t retain any of that kind of stuff. At all. It just happens that that’s one of the maybe dozen songs, over all the seasons combined (not counting Lambert, who I downloaded weekly) that I had, and still have, on my iPod. Phil will, of course, go in a completely different direction. Steven cracks me up by saying “Well, that’s pretty close to the actual melody, which is good, but might freak people out.” HA! And? True! But, I like it. Totally different end of the spectrum, but plays well with the scratchy/growly stuff. And….okay, so, on actual performance, I might not be downloading it, but I loved the vibe of it, a lot. Cleaned up in the studio a little, with some help on those high notes–okay, a lot of help, man, they were sharp–I would listen to this again. And that? Is a first for this season. I would buy the acoustic of this, sans the singing, in a heartbeat. Judges: enjoy, liked the mellow vibe. They don’t mention the sharp, so maybe it sounded clearer in person.

The girls sing their trio number, and…sure, okay. (Filler! And no way as inadvertently entertaining as the duet earlier.) Okay, so it’s funny when Skylar mocks Hollie’s accent…and nails it! Then Skylar and Hollie mock Jessica’s vibrato, and ha! Then Jessica says they’re, like, totally going to, you know, like sing it. Sigh. See? Keep Hollie, America. Just sayin. Your Love is Lifting Me Higher is the tune, and well, if anyone can belt out a song, it’s these three. In fact, I’m sure no other trio on Idol had that kind of power. And…it was nice, and nice to see Hollie holding her own, personality wise, with these two, but, again….filler! Judges: Thought it was cute. Really….cute. (Skylar is cute with Ryan. “Oh, shoot, we’re a ten, what are you talking about.)

Skylar is going with You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me, by Dusty Springfield. Skylar also enjoys the two of them in rehearsal, to the point she’s dying laughing. Bring him back. Jimmy wants her to go country with it, Steven wants him to leave her alone. I love the tone of this song with her voice. She smooths out the gravel in her tone and it’s really lovely. And? She listens to Steven. Thank you! I hope she gets the votes this week. She goes a bit gravel and high note-y at the end, which i wasn’t a fan of, I wished she’d stayed strong and quietly evocative with it, even with the power, but all in all, I really loved this. Helps her out on the night, I think. Again, shows a maturity that is a good thing. Of course, I said it last week, and she ended up in the bottom. So…I have no clue what will happen to her this week. Judges: Loved it, as I did, for the same reasons.

Jessica goes with Cocker’s You Are So Beautiful. Jimmy thinks it’s lounge-y and I agree. I’d have rather heard Joshua, Skylar, or Phil on this. Jessica slows it down and ballads it up, with that solo guitar I wish Hollie had had with her Leona song. It was very delicate and lovely. If I had been liking her all season, I’d love this. I don’t know if this will help her, but it sure as hell won’t hurt her. It was lovely. Judges: love it. Rightfully so.

Now it’sJoshua turn to close the show, wanting to do Tom Jones, which the boyz shoot down. They give him To Love Somebody, which he didn’t know, but went and learned it, and came back 15 minutes later and kills it. Steven loves it, so…I have to trust. I’d have enjoyed him doing Tom Jones, the original bombastic singer, but in oh so the best of ways. And, he does close the show in stand out Joshua fashion. I like that he at least takes his time before he goes over the top with it. It’s funny, because I adored that very same thing with Lambert, but his is a little harsher on my ear drums I guess. Still, that was really well done, nice close to the show. Steven? He’s the man. He was right. Judges are up on their feet. AGAIN for him. So, we know how they feel. It must sound all kinds of even more powerful in person the way they go on and on about him every week.

For Round 2…I don’t know, I think Jessica had a strong showing. Skylar was up there. And Joshua, of course. I think Joshua had the best night, overall.

It was a really strong week. Pretty good stuff! I can’t guess who is in the Bottom 3 after this, or Bottom 2…so all I can say with a fair amount of confidence is, it won’t be Phil. I doubt it will be Joshua. So, girls….yeah, look out.

What say you, Blog Babes? I know what I say…I saw that commercial for So You Think You Can Dance. 3 WEEKS! May 24. I can’t wait!! But right now? DISH!!

DWTS Results…kinda what we expected, only not exactly.

I really enjoyed the DWTS results show, for a change. I actually watched all the entertainment and everything! Sure, it was kind of chaotic at times, but that kept the tension ramped up anyway.

We discover from Tom that now that things are finally getting interesting, this will be the last dance duel. Awww. So, everyone kind of agreed they thought it would be Melissa and either Jaleel or Roshon, with many of you, myself included, thinking it would be Jaleel. Well, it was Jaleel…AND Roshon. Melissa, the only one everyone thought was in danger….yeah, no. She was safe. Go figure. So that’s our rumba dance duel.

Now, if you recall, I thought Roshon did all kinds of good in his rumba, but the judges, not so much. So he was feeling incredible pressure. Jaleel had put on his smart aleck cap, and while it was funny, in the moment, that, packaged with some fairly tense rehearsal footage, gives us a better insight into what Kym was putting up with all season. And, frankly, were any of us surprised? I’m thinking no. It looks like she just knuckled down and tried to make the best of what was kind of a somewhat abusive situation. Or, at the very least, a tricky, landmine kind of one.

But, before we get to the duel, Gavin is back to sing for us, and I loved that song. Really, really loved it. So much that I went looking to download it. It was great having Karina dancing to him singing, and you could tell everyone loved having him back, especially Tom. So that was fun.

We also got the final Ballroom Battle, between the three winning pros’ teams. I’ve been watching online each week, and very much enjoying it. It was down to Cheryl (who beat Karina), Tony (who beat Lacey), and Louis (who YAY beat Mark.) I know they were running a big late, so it all seemed kind of rushed, but, to be honest, given how great these kids did in the battle rounds, I was somewhat under impressed with their jive grande finale performances. They seemed a bit frenzied (even for jive), like there wasn’t really time to complete their moves. All in all, I liked Louis’ team best, then Tony, then Cheryl. However, the very rushed judges panel, who had next to no time to deliberate at all, jumbled out that it was the exact reverse order, and Cheryl’s team came out on top, with Louis’ last. Hunh! Then they kind of threw the trophy at them and let’s move along. I really wished (and I’m sure they did, too) that that segment had gone more smoothly, because it was pretty cool.

But the coolest thing of all, not to mention tear-jerkingly awesome, was when the Groovaloo’s came out to perform, including Steelo Vazquez, one of their members who had a brain aneurysm that should have killed and left him severely impaired…and he danced! It was really nothing short of miraculous, after watching the film package of his ordeal. I mean, was I the only one crying and dancing at the same time? Because they were enormously talented and I loved watching them dance, but when he came out….just wow. I don’t anyone who wasn’t moved by that display. The in house audience sure wasn’t. They were still cheering, loudly, shouting Steelo, Steelo to a very moved young man, when Tom and Brooke had to move the show along. One of my favorite “hard life” stories ever told on that show. Truly amazing. And I’d love to see them perform again as a troupe. Great fun!

So, the finale dance duel was almost anticlimactic at this point, but off we go. Both Jaleel and Roshon had been in the dance duel before, so even footing there…and Roshon and Chelsie killed their rumba the same way they did the time before, only with Chelsie being a lot more fluid in movement, really complementing Roshon this time. To be fair, Jaleel was also good, but, as hard as it was watching them both side by side, my eyes kept being drawn to Roshon and Chelsie. In the end, all three judges voted to save a very relieved Roshon.

I thought Jaleel’s end of competition speech was a good one, and funny, and that he was mostly relieved to just be done with the whole thing. Kym’s speech was very telling in that it was kindly generic and also seemed more relieved than anything. So….maybe the best man lost last night. I was fine with him leaving. But, Melissa? You really escaped it this week!!

Tonight, it’s American Idol British Invasion week. I’m just not even saying anything until we see how they all do.

What say you, Blog Babes? Were you happy with last night’s DWTS Results? Now that Elise and her frowny frown are gone, who are you looking forward to this evening? I hope Hollie continues to do well, and will be interesting to see if Skylar rebounds, if Phil2 keeps things going, and, well….I’ll see you back here later with all the DISH.

Now, it’s your turn!

Dancing with Mozart….mmm….mebbe not the best idea.

We’re LIIIIIIIVE! (Thanks once again to On the Red Carpet for the photos!)

You know, somehow I’d blanked out in my mind how bad last season’s Classical Week was. The highlight, by far, was Katherine singing, so perhaps that was the good feeling I had about the return of this theme this week. But, you know, as much of a marriage as you’d think ballroom and classical music might be, unless it’s the waltz….yeah, not so much. In fact, really, really not. So, it wasn’t nearly the enjoyable night that last week was.

For me, it was awkward right off the bat, as the pairs came down the stairs, wearing the oddest mishmash of costumes. Only a few of them particularly flattering. At first I thought that perhaps it was just jarring after the opening, when the Troupe danced while some guy had a nervous breakdown playing the violin (seriously, dude, I know you’re famous and all, but we get it. You’re amazing. Calm. Down.) He was hard to watch. But the costuming for hat opening dance was stunning.

So…then the pairs came out and I thought, well…maybe that’s it.

But, no.

It takes a lot, in fact I’d have said it was impossible, to make Katherine Jenkins look bad. But they managed it. It was a really unfortunate Grecian themed outfit/diaper/hair twig ensemble that didn’t work. Then someone told Mark he should take his shirt off for the rumba, and really, SO not right. Now, I’ll say right up front that he’s got a very nice body, but, when you’re in a season with bodies like Donald Driver and William Levy, and Maks, for that matter, if you’re going to take off your shirt, do it while dancing something manly. Alpha manly. Like Argentine Tango. Or the Paso Doble. Rumba? No. That’s a very pointy-toed, hip swivel-y dance for a guy to do. Yes, yes, it’s supposed to be sinuous and sexy, but it’s hard for guys to do sinuous at times without looking feminine and Mark? Just…put your shirt on, mkay? Maybe some shoulder pads. Grecian breastplates. Man it up, is all I’m sayin.

It was awkward to watch, for me, and wasn’t their best dance. They’re always beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but with already seriously awkward music, don’t compound the problem with clunky costumes and more bare skin on the guy than the girl. In this case, anyway. Judges reviews were pretty much in the same wheelhouse. Score: a generous 27

Next up is Maks/Melissa with Argentine tango. Maks is hurt, so Melissa dances with both him and Val all week (poor thing) but come performance time, Maks is good to go. Okay, case in point: guy comes out in tights and a leather laced up vest with puffy sleeves…and that? Is hot. It’s all in how you fill it out. Mark. Just sayin. But the dance? I completely agreed with the judges. It might have felt good to the dancers as they performed, but it was awkward placement all over the place and when she had to part her legs so he could swing her up and around? Wow, was that unflattering or what? I winced for her. A lot. Her dress, while not really bad, did her no favors. the undergarment, as she moved, had a certain granny-panty look to it that didn’t help and the white filmy overlay was at times very alluring and at other times very..gauzy. And not in a good way. It was far, far from their best dance, and in a week where they needed it. (And yes, the music for it sucked. Tango to Mozart? Really?) It had nothing of the tango vibe to it, at all. So I’ll give them that. Score: a very correct 21. (Perhaps part of why Melissa was so put out with the comments was because her back surgeon was in the audience and she was embarrassed….i don’t know. But when they watch that back, they’ll see - the judges had it right. This time. I think they’re in danger.

William/Cheryl very mercifully get the Viennese Waltz, which is possibly one of the only dances that will work well with the music tonight. And since I enjoy William’s manly form, I’m happy to see him in tux and tails, whirling a deeply cleavaged Cheryl around the ballroom. They dance to the child prodigy, 12 year old Jackie Ivanko (sp) who I have heard much about, but never heard sing. I hope it pairs well. And I hope his ankle holds up! (Can they strap it, like with tennis players? I hope so!) Okay, so before we even get to the dancing, that kid? Is a freak. And I mean that in the very, very best of ways. Holy crap! I expected a stunning vocal, given what I’d heard, but nothing so rich and mature and all….womanly. I mean, she’s 12 (and she looks about 9.) So…it’s just freaky. If you were in another room just listening, and someone bet you money that was a kid singing? Seriously, you’d be your entire life savings they were wrong. That’s how freaky it is.

Okay…so on to the dance. (Please don’t fall, Wills!) And just…..wow. Deep, appreciative sigh. He’s so fluid and moves so well, and yet he’s just so damn manly and good looking while he does it. Am I the only one who would pay large sums to have him move me around the dance floor like that? It would be a Cinderella at the Ball Moment, that’s for sure. I’m not sure his shoulder frame was right the whole time (I’m sure Len will let us know) but he was immensely graceful and, did I mention intensely manly? Seriously, you want those hands on your waist, don’t you? Oh, and it matched the music stunningly. Standing O from me. For them, for that little girl, for the whole thing. I loved every last thing about that. (Aw, and how adorable are William’s little kids?) Here I thought his Latin dances would easily fill up his Best Dance column, but this ranks right up there with them. No contest. Judges gave good remarks, even Len! (And this is his most critical dance.) I especially loved Bruno’s comments. I know, I know! But those? Were his most mature comments ever. Score: 27 (I might have gone higher, just on loveliness alone, but that was earned.

Roshon and Chelsie get Argentine Tango. And I worry. A lot. Because I thought they did all kinds of good with the very difficult rumba, especially given his age. So, to nail this…well, I’m sure I will love it, but I worry the judges will tank on him again. So underserved last week. Here’s hoping! I feel bad that Roshon felt he had to elevate his game, because he’d already done that. I just hope the judges are more fair with him this week. (He gets help from Val, who really nails it. It’s so weird, because he sounds just like his brother, but he’s a lot….nicer. :) ) And, wow, this music couldn’t be more wrong for tango. Sigh. Especially Argentine. And to compound the issue, instead of a classical standard, they’re doing the classical version of….Bad Romance. By Gaga. No. I’m so not kidding. SO wrong. Is it a great dance? No. Mostly I blame exceedingly awkward musical timing. Chelsie had great choreo, but the holds were so long, while waiting for the next beat, it didn’t flow like it should have. All things considered, I think they did really, really well with what they were given. I just think what they were given sucked. And Roshon’s footwork on the flicks was clumsy and clunky, too. Music, or just him, hard to tell. But I think they’ll be in trouble. Judges? Were incredibly kind! (Up is down, down is up. I’ll never figure them out.) But I’m thrilled and relieved. Scores? 25 (I think that’s actually fair, this week.)

Donald and Peta are up with Viennese Waltz. They get star tenor Vittorio….someone as accompanying vocalist. I loved the last singer, so fingers crossed! It looks like she’s loaded this routine, and I’m excited to see it! Okay, so Vittorio is a cutie! And I likey! The over the top costuming really works with this, and Peta nails the choreo to the challenging music stops and starts. Well done, you! Very King & I. I loved it. Best of the night, in technicality and execution. Really wonderful. Judges: loved it. Even Len. (There better be 10’s!) Scores:27 Wow, tough crowd. I thought, given other routines that have earned 10’s that this one easily earned them.

Maria & Derek get the paso doble! Yay! Aww, Derek really hurts her feelings in rehearsal (and DUH! Dude, don’t tell a woman she’s not attractive or female enough. Even tomboys have feelings.) She’s clearly still unnerved by it when she did the camera interview later. I hope on playback, he realizes his mistake, as I know he’s generally a good guy, and apologizes. There should be flowers involved at the very least. Derek. Okay, so on to the dance, which looks like it might be a good one! I love me some paso! The music, shockingly, is brilliant. Derek, who has a physique much like Mark’s, understands when to show skin, and more importantly, how to show it. Well done, you! And, okay, so I wasn’t a fan of the fangs, but I’m one apparently a very small minority who doesn’t “get” the vampire thing. Not into furs n fangs. (Werewolves and…well, you get my drift.) But, it worked with the intensity of emotion, and you knew how it was going to end…and it did. But played really well. I thought this was easily the best paso of this season. Not that that’s saying a whole lot, but it was incredibly well done. I hope the judges loved it as much as I did. It was fierce. She definitely channeled all that hurt into that dance and I was feelin’ for her! Would we all have that kind of outlet. Ha! Surged to the top of the board for me. Judges:loved it. I feel 10’s… Scores? Perfect 30! The first one of the season. And totally earned every single one of them. Plus, you had to feel her vindication, didn’t you? All the sweeter.

Kym and Jaleel get the final pairs dance of the night, with Viennese Waltz. After Donald and William killed it, I’m worried. Since the judges did right by Roshon this week, will Jaleel be joining Melissa in the bottom? They get the theme song to Downton Abbey, which….kinda weird. We don’t get to hear the lyrics that go with it on the Masterpiece Theater series, but we get them tonight. It’s the only time I don’t think the vocal accompaniment helped, but it didn’t really hinder, either. It was lovely enough, but it lacked the romance of William’s and the power of Donald’s, which was a shame. After some really good performances, not a strong finish to the night, but that was pretty much the best they could do with less than powerful music (and a tiresomely repetitive vocal.) Aww. Judges: were more critical than I’d have liked, but…okay. I was happy Carrie Ann ended on a helpful, supportive note. Scores:24 And that was right, on the night.

Tristan and Karina dance to crazy child prodigy Jackie and it was utterly gorgeous, both the singing and the dancing.

Now we get Team Dances! Wahoo! Captains are Katherine and WIlliam. Yay! Given the level of skill this year, with no weak dancers they have to “blend in” (read: hide) this could be amazing! We have Team Tango v Team Paso. Yowza! Team Tango is up first, with 4 pairs to the other team’s 3: Derek/Maria, Chelsie/Roshon, Katherine/Mark, Jaleel/Kym. Which means you get Cheryl/William, Maks/Melissa and Donald/Peta on the other team. I told you this was going to be tough! The trash talk was kinda funny. Only Roshon could pull that off.

Team Tango is all in tuxes, the girls’ tuxes are kind of catsuit-y. It’s sharp, but I wanted sexier. The black was kind of unrelenting. And while it helped to keep them all looking samey-samey dance wise, I wanted better distinction between the couples. With the ladies all wearing hats…I dunno. I wanted sexier. Sorry. The dancing was pretty strong, so I think the costuming really hurt that.

Mark/Katherine and Chelsie/Roshon were the most distinctive, with Chelsie’s exaggerations working this time, I think, because they needed something to stand out. The music worked well with the pulse of it, and the ending was really clever, but I just wished there had been some color. And some skin. I’m guessing Bruno will back me up on that.

Judges? Len marked Roshon and Maria as the best and said some was
good, some lines, not so much. Thought Jaleel was soft and Katherine a bit wild. I’d have to watch it again, because Maria was sharp, but kind of…not attention getting. Maybe it was just Katherine’s blond hair relieving some of all that black. Bruno: Also said Roshon killed it (he can thank his partner, because their choreo was very SYTYCD inspired and I loved it.) He also liked Katherine. Carrie Ann: She loved the concept, choreo, gives Jaleel props, but agrees Roshon killed it. No one mentioned the outfits. Humph. Score? CA: 10 Len: 8 Bruno: 9 for 27 I’d go with 9 across the board, so it all works out in the end.

Team Paso…bring it!!! And, bless your red clad hearts, they’re bringing the heat AND the hot costumes! And, frankly…given they have Maks, Donald, Wlliam? Seriously, just have them strip to their waist and stalk around the floor. I’m good! Pass the umbrella drinks and just join me right down here in the shallow end of the pool. Trust me, you’ll have a good time! (And, as Maks notes, with the girls, they have a blonde, a brunette, and a redhead. And, it does look really good.) See? Color is GOOD! No hats!

Here we go! And they get the perfect paso music of all time. The opening isn’t quite as clever as Team Tango, and Maks/Melissa open with her, as usual, looking like she’s running to keep up with Maks…but it gets cleaner as they go on. (He needs to choreo for the partner he has, not the partner he wishes he had.)

Then William/Cheryl come out and…poo! They look all stompy and clompy and Cheryl overselling it is not helping, in this case, but it gets stronger. And they look pretty damn good!

Donald and Peta come out and totally kill it, but its watching them, even as they’re killing it, that makes me realize that the pacing of the song itself is what is undermining the dance. It’s too damn fast for this! What a shame. It’s the exact right kind of power, but way too speedy. Hard to look all dominant and bullish when you’re sprinting about.

They redeem a great deal with the crazy hot cape work at the end (and sure, the shirtless element didn’t hurt, I won’t lie!)

Seriously….

And with all that speed rushing into that hotness, and the final group choreo, it does end super, super strong.

You’re breathless by the end and the crowd goes completely ape. I think they win it. Judges? Bruno loves it, and all three shirtless guys run over and hug him - hilarious!! Awesome. Carrie Ann (who only wishes she had the group shirtless hug - I know I do!) said it will go down as fan favorite (which, oh yeah! That ending sealed that.) Len says….all nice things! Wow! I think they win it. Scores? CA: 9 Len: 8 Bruno: 9. 26 Crowd boos loudly. Only a 1 point difference, so I can live with it, but I enjoyed them way more.

On the night, I think Bottom 2: Melissa is the one definitely in trouble. After that, it’s really going to depend on the voters. The overall scores are pretty tight. My guess? Jaleel.

Gavin deGraw comes back tomorrow night to sing on the results show - yay! Should be a good one. And wow, whoever gets in the Dance Duel? It’s going to be close. I think if it’s Jaleel v Melissa, that Jaleel would likely take it. But you never know!

What say you , Blog Babes?? DISH!!

Good Wife season 3 is over…and so is Amazing Race. Well, for me, anyway. Sob!

The real kicker about last night’s episode of The Good Wife? I thought it was the lead up to the finale, not THE finale. BOO! (And what’s up with a finale in April? Before May sweeps? That’s just all kinds of wrong.) However, what was delivered was all kinds of delicious. And kinda funny. Finally we’re getting into Kalinda’s background, though, seriously, can we just move it along? I did love it when she marched into the hardware store and bought that mallet. Kalinda on a search and destroy mission is always Fun. I enjoyed the Jackie Smackdowns, again, but was a little confused about the movie playing. I mean, I got that it wasn’t really playing, but…anyway. Do we need to know she’s going senile? Peter seemed to shrug that idea right off as, “Well, sure she is, she’s oooolllllld.”

Loved having Martha Plimpton AND Michael J back. Loved the fake-out. Love that this means we get both of them and Chandler back in the fall. Love the twisty turns in the relationship with Peter and Alicia, and was stunned that he admitted they were separated. (Although, one of the things that has had me kind of rolling my eyes all along was that the fact they’ve been living separately all this time was never leaked…what with all the other scandal he was part of, someone would have been paying attention…) Love how they’re setting up Lockhart/Gardner on the brink of falling completely to ruin. Love that Cary’s back! And the group scene in front of the elevator? Priceless!

And yes, I laughed every time that little tyke went rolling by in her wheelie seat, tunes a’crankin.

Can’t wait for the fall season!

On the other hand, I can wait all kinds of time before the Amazing Race finale next weekend. Deep disappointed sigh, casting directors. Yes, Team Kentucky, despite their second last-second non-elim save (which made me all verklempt last week)…couldn’t overcome the three hour deficit this week. Poo! Which leaves us with TeamAggroArmyDude and his increasingly annoying passive-aggressive wife…who, really…run for the hills, RUN!! She’s probably a pretty nice person, but she’s turned into, well, into someone you don’t want to watch on your tv, as a result of having to deal with his constant put downs, condescension, and belittling attitude. Sure, he comes around and occasionally notices that his wife kicks some serious ass, and that he’d be nowhere if he was saddled with either of the other two women left on this race (my god, he’d have straight up killed the other Rachel eons ago…) Although - when you actually think about it, any positive comments made about their strength as a team usually comes from her. And, is it me or does the way he neck locks her to kiss her on the head–never on the lips mind you–heebie you out as much as it does me? I think it’s just a matter of hitting the finish line before she hits the road. Here’s your lovely parting gift, see ya! One can hope.

So…yeah. We’re left with them, with Team “Get a nose job-hey, I was just trying to help!” Smarm, and Team Big WhineyHotMessBro, both of whom you never want to see win a million. (And in the case of Big Bro, that’s win another million. Yeesh!! Where is the karma I ask you, that these two get chances to win that kind of money, not once, but twice? Really, universe?) Which leaves us with Team Border Patrol. Now, they have had some redeeming qualities. Occasionally. But as AJ isn’t feeling well (or is it Art? I get them confused…) he’s just crankier and crankier. I like his teammate just fine, but all in all, it’s harder to wish them a million, either. I do hope they follow through with giving up some of their winnings to help Team Kentucky’s families out.

But, honestly, it’s hard, not to mention frustrating, to watch the finale, and not be able to root for anyone to hit the finish line. I mean, the only way to look at it is who don’t you want to win the most, and root against them. And that would have to be all three of the girl/guy teams. Comparatively speaking, only. I have to say, I probably enjoyed the tasks and countries more on this race than I have in some time, but the teams probably the least. I hope, next go, we get more teams we can honestly root for. (And you just know Phil’s pheeling the same way. I mean, he called the girls out again on the mat. HA!)

On a far more positive note, Once Upon A Time was muy delicioso last night, was it not? We finally learn that August is actually Pinnochio. Love how the backstory winds us back to the pilot, and How It All Began. Love that RumpelGold put together, given his lies and such, just who August really was. Love that Regina is finding it harder and harder to win one for the team. Smackdowns by Mary Margaret, David, and her own son! All in one episode. Ah yes, it wasn’t good to be the Evil Queen this week, and I’m all for that. The final scene with August reuniting with his father (even if Storybrooke Gepetto didn’t know it was his son) was pretty touching. And Emma being dragged, kicking and screaming, almost literally, into becoming a responsible adult…only to, once again, do the most irresponsible thing ever and try to kidnap Henry, yeah, well…they can’t all be highlights. They need to start moving that forward in a more positive and likable way, and pronto. Loved the actor who played Pinnochio as a child (despite the screamingly wrong eye color) and Baby Emma was utterly adorable. Still, all in all, more pieces to the puzzle….and only a few more eps to go!! Bring it, writers!! Don’t let us down.

And tonight? It’s Classical Week on Dancing With the Stars!! And, over on Idol, it’s British Invasion Week! I’m super excited about the former, and….um…yeah, not so much on the latter. I can’t bitch about not letting the kids sing current music, since they all royally screwed that up last week, but….well, we’ll see how this goes!

So, Blog Babes…are you loving Good Wife as much as I am? So twisty, so turny! Can you believe it’s over already? And, are you rooting for anyone to win Amazing Race this season? Who would you be most upset by with the win? I’d have to say Team Big Bro on that one, mostly because they got the million dollar win already. And….who are you rooting for on Dancing With the Stars this week? All the chaff is gone, we’re left with cream of the crop now, where any dancer remaining has the ability to bring it….or to lose it!! I’m excited! (Amazing Race casting folks….pay attention to that DWTS casting and Do The Right Thing next season and give us Nice People! It works! Ratings go UP!) Now it’s your turn to….DISH!!!

Idol Top 6 Results! Who rocked you? And who did not….

It’s results night, and….Jennifer got the memo on the hammer pants, so decided to just wear a stretchy top as a dress. A very tight stretchy dress. I doubt any man in the audience was complainin’. Also? Jimmy is back. I know. I’m torn. I don’t want to hear him rag on the kids…and yet, I find myself wanting to get his take on last night’s performances. It’s a twisted Jimmy world. Katy Perry and Stefano (from Season 10) will perform, and, due to time constraints and me having to get this posted tonight? Yeah, I’m just telling you right now, I’m FF’ing through those.

However, I have to at least give the band that Queen picked to go on tour with them (after an online competition? Wha?) a short listen. Here’s The Queen Extravaganza. Yikes, that name. Right off the bat, how freaky is it that the pianist/lead singer looks like Freddie’s clean cut, football playing nephew? So weird. In a good way. I think. And hey, whaddya know? They’re pretty damn good, if slightly speeding through the song.

And? THIS! Is American Idol Top 6 Results!

So, they send them to TMZ’s studios to be play-harrassed by, well, by guys that work for places like TMZ. And, how young and naive did they look just standing there, you know? Babies, all of them. Yes, Elise, even you.

Now? Results.

Jessica & Elise up first. Jimmy? Didn’t like J’s BoRhap, either. But, did anybody like it? So many to choose from…so yes, totally ill fitting choice. She loved her Vandross rendition. He loved it more than I did, but agreed it was a good performance, and her dad is in the audience tonight. So, thanks, Jimmy, for not trashing her tribute to him. On Elise...Jimmy agrees with Randy…and ME. Wrong on Queen, wrong on Hendrix. And he did a much better job of explaining why you can’t do Hendrix, unless you DO Hendrix. Elise? She did not. Now, that said, these two were in my Bottom 2 this week, but with them being first up, hmm….now I wonder. Ryan, who goes to the Silver Stools of Doom?

Jessica is safe, while Elise and her stank face of why are they piiiiicking on meeee, it’s so unfaaaaaaaair! She’s in the Bottom 3.

Casey “Grizzly” Abrams comes out for no discernible reason, then it’s Stefano Does Electro Pop, and FF……

Next is Hollie & Joshua… Awww, I don’t want Hollie in the Bottom 3. So booo. Because I doubt it’s Joshua’s turn for a stool of doom rotation. Jimmy likes Hollie this week, grades her a B+. He gives Joshua good props on both songs, especially the India.Arie second song, and says he’s in prime place to win the final. Of course, then he makes the very foreboding comment that if Joshua is voted off tonight, then the whole show and voting process is full of bs. Hmmmm….

So? Yep….Hollie is in the Bottom 3, Joshua in the Top 3. The crowd can’t really even boo, because, duh, Joshua does belong in the top 3. I just hate that there’s not even token support for her continued drubbing. Ah well…

We’re left with Phil2 and Skylar. (Well, after fast forwarding through Katy Perry. Sorry. I like you well enough, KP, but no time.)

This is the only really interesting and questionable pair of the night, as I’d have put them in both in the Top 3, along with Joshua - based on season long fan accumulation for Phil, anyway. So, did his totally uneven song choices last night finally render him vulnerable? WDJS? (What Does Jimmy Say?) On Skylar - all madd props and goodness on Song 1, not so much with Song 2. But hey, no one topped Joshua on Song 2, so…whatevs, Jimmy. On Phil.…Jimmy surprisingly couches his critique by adding that he’s well aware that Phil still isn’t up to par physically (he’s been plagued with kidney stones and has had those health issues most of his life.) I wasn’t aware he was still suffering that much, but, if so, then sure…that doesn’t help. But that doesn’t necessarily excuse song choice, either, and Jimmy agrees. He feels it made him vulnerable enough for someone else (Skylar and Joshua?) to make the Final 2. And, if his health is really failing him, then…yeah. I see it. Don’t see him going home this week, but I didn’t think it was Colton’s turn last week, either. And, for this week, he does deserve Bottom 3.

And? It’s Skylar in the Bottom. Phil2 survives. So…wow. All I can say is, this better not be the “oh, we know she’s safe, let’s vote for someone else” week and we get a blindside. Because it wasn’t for lack of performance this week. In fact, I honestly thought she gained votes this week.

Fast-forwarding through, because, come on, just tell us already….who, of the Bottom 3, gets sent to safety? Well, thank you Ryan for making that short and quick…Skylar heads back to safety as quickly as she left it. Still, I can’t believe she garnered fewer votes than Jessica. Really? Jessica?? Sigh.

Who goes…Hollie or Elise. Either way, given the constant time spent on those stools, it’s no shock either way, but I would consider it a personal favor if America finally decided to let Elise and her Eeyore Gloomy Gus face go. Yes, I know, this week she tried to blame it on her natural facial structure (and wow, did you see the staff chick the TMZ’ers compared her to? I’m sorry, but you don’t have to have a false grin to look like a nice person. And that chick? Looked totally pissed off. Yikes for her.)

And? Thank you!! Elise sings Zepplin on her way out the door.

Next week? We’re down to 5, and with the Skylar/Jessica shake up this week…who knows. Does it even matter anymore? Do we care? I’m starting to wonder…

What say you, Blog Babes? Are you keeping the faith? Do you have favorites? What about Phil’s phailing health woes? Could it be Joshua/Skylar? Or…Jessica?!? It’s your turn….DISH!

Idol Top 6 sings Queen….and whaddya know? I liked it! The rest? Eh, not so much.

Tonight on Idol we’ve apparently not only given up entirely on Tommy Hilfiger, which is awesome, because every single one of them looked good tonight (well, Phil looked like he just got done cleaning the garage, as usual, but otherwise…) Oh, and Jennifer, honey…whoever told you that it was Hammer Time again? They lied. Please, leave the harem pants, especially the gold ones, at home. Yikes. We also apparently gave up on Jimmy and mentor sessions. And if all of that means we get more performances like tonight? Let’s go with that from now on, mkay?

We start off with Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen playing on stage with the remaining contestants, and while I don’t know the Final 6 did anything up there worth doing, they didn’t embarrass themselves, either. BUT, what made it awesome? Was just getting to hear Brian May light it up on guitar. These are My People, that is My Generation, and I loved every last crazy ripping lick he laid down. Freddie, I miss you just as much today as I did all those years ago when we lost you. Thank you Brian & Roger for some great memories tonight.

Then we’re on to Round 1 of the evening, where each singer tackles a Queen song on their own. Round 2 they get to sing their choice. Now, you know, for weeks, I’ve been saying, “Let them sing stuff that shows who they want to be as an artist.” Well…after last night…maybe yes, and maybe…not so much. If you’d asked me which of these two rounds would have gone better, I’d have said, hands down, it’s going to be Round 2. I just hoped they got through the Queen songs without ruining some of my favorite music for me. Queen songs are tricky and almost impossible to do without sounding karaoke, or worse.

So, color me surprised when I actually found myself enjoying Round 1, for the most part. Definitely, on the night, it was, for me, by far, the better round of the two. Now, I didn’t go all cray-cray like the judges did all night long–though, I’ll admit, it was a nice change up from the crankypants judges from DWTS the night before. I don’t really care what the judges say on Idol at this point, so better they’re nice than a buzzkill, and I’m good. Also? A completely Jimmy-free night was absolutely a Good Thing for me. Hello, Little Steven, sitting next to him in the audience, though! Got all excited thinking he was mentor this week…only…apparently not so much. All in all, Jimmy-free and Mentor-free was a really welcome relief.

It was when we got to Round 2 that I found myself scratching my head, more often than not. Not only by their song choices, on more than several occasions, but by the judges reactions, as well. Down was up, up was down, dogs and cats, living together…it was like I had gone down the rabbit hole and was the only one thinking “wha? That wasn’t good, much less ovation worthy. Come on!”

Okay, so here’s the list of who sang what and my reactions. First off, true, everyone sang their asses off. Totally and completely. No one had a bad night, per se. I just thought some were really way more productive than others in moving the singer forward in the competition. It was a good night for music, a good night for performing, just, for some…it could have been so much better in helping them as an artist. What made it really stand out for me was that each performer had their musicians on stage with them, and from the rock guitarists, to the sax players to the fiddlers, it really enhanced each performance ten-fold. Sure, often times it almost overwhelmed the singer in terms of who was the loudest, but in general, the music itself really helped sell the performance a great deal. In fact, I’m not too sure I wasn’t enjoying the music itself the most, really, and the singing just incidentally went along with it.

Jessica was up first and she took Bohemian Rhapsody. I was hoping Joshua would take that one, since you knew somebody would. This was a prime example of loving the band, but the singer…eh. She didn’t hurt the song, but, as always, it was round peg, square hole. She’s not a rocker. That said, I was thankful Elise didn’t get it, because I just don’t like her voice and I love this song, so…there was that. Also>? The fact that they slotted anyone singing BoRhapsody first? Yeah, you know it’s not going to be special. For Idol BoRhap special, see (of all people) Constantine Maroulis version. No, really. Watch here. That? Is how to sing that song, on Idol anyway. (And he closed with it.) Second round Jessica sat down and sang Dance With My Father. It was lovely and soft, and sounded heartfelt….for her, anyway (her dad is being deployed, so it was for him.) Didn’t make me connect with her any more than I usually don’t, but, it was, at least, lovelier to listen to, and so was thankful, at least, for that. I wouldn’t download either performance. They weren’t season stand outs, memorable-wise, either, and I don’t think either performance garnered new votes for her. Will be interesting to see if they lost her any.

Skylar was up next, and whoever was dressing her last night did a fantastic job. Keep that person next to you at all times when making wardrobe choice, young one. That first dress was the most flattering thing I’ve seen her wear all season. On Round 1 she sang Queen’s lesser known The Show Must Go On, and I thought, for Round 1, this was a stand out, if not the best over all. Great job, didn’t over do it (sorry Steven, she was right not to twaaang it up) and really sold the performance. One of her most mature performances ever. Definitely helped her out. It made me like her better, and I’m betting I’m not the only one. Round 2, she sang an Aldean standard country tune and did her usual Skylar country best with it, but she also softened up her twang a little, and I think she did herself a favor with that, as it made her sound a bit more marketable and palatable, especially to the not-so-country masses. Overall, the second song was kind of a throwaway country regular for her, and good but not memorable - but her Queen choice was a true stand out. On the night, she was the winner for me. (And I’m not ranking these as a personal fan, just as how I think they did, by the standards of who should win this comparatively speaking.)

Third up was Joshua, who chose Crazy Little Thing Called Love and it was enjoyable, if every bit as bombastic as usual. Not quite sure I loved his whole “hold the old fashioned mic smashed against my mouth” thing as much as when Freddie did it…but, mkay. He does lay it all out there. Judges stood up. I just enjoyed the ride. It didn’t hurt him, but unless you already love him, it wasn’t going to change your mind. Round 2 he went with Ready For Love, and that? I actually liked it okay. By which I mean, I didn’t fast forward through it. Which I often do when I don’t want him screaming at me any longer. But he sold it emotionally as well as vocally. He was one of the only ones I liked better on Round 2, and, the two performances combined put on a really good show for him — if you like him. I don’t know that he won over new fans. Still, I’d rank him in second place on the night, comparative to the rest. For what he does, he done good.

On stage next was Elise. Now…we know I don’t like her. I also don’t find her voice particularly appealing. And I love me some rock and roll. She just has this vocal quality to her tone that doesn’t make my ears happy at all. I thought she’d do well with Queen, as it’s possibly as close to her Zepplin Moment as she might get to. So, she sings I Want it All, I Want it Now. As rock anthems go, the band was awesome. And Elise? Yeah…she did what she does. I still really, really don’t like her voice. Judges thought it was good, but for me….eh, still Elise. Then, on Round 2, she went Jimmy Hendrix with one of his songs that no one knows (no, Elise, we don’t, sorry) and I was with Randy all the way on this one. I thought it was the most awful caterwauling I’ve ever heard. Of course, while I respect Hendrix for the rock god he was, he’s not on my personal playlists, so…I get this could be Just Me. But….I hated it. Truly. So, on the night? She stayed right where she was before for me. Which is firmly in the “please, for the love of god, go home” slot. And take Jessica with you. So sorry.

Phil2 goes next and Queen is so not in his wheelhouse. So I thought it was kind of fun and playful that he went with Fat Bottom Girls. Until he, you know, sang it. He had the right whimsy and wink wink going, but the thing about Freddie was he could do the rasp, but still deliver the lyrics so you heard them and understood the story being told. And in Fat Bottom Girls, it don’t work if you don’t hear the words. Phil mashed them all up and lost a whole lot in translation, which was a shame. Because he was on the right road…just wandered off into ditch water again. Not a travesty, but eh….. However, I thought fo sho, come Round 2, when he could finally chose something directly in his line of sight, he’d kill it. He even went with Dave Matthews, so…that was a good idea, right? Oh….so very, very no. He picks obscure Matthews. (Really? What is WRONG with y’all? Jimmy? I take it all back. I didn’t mind not seeing you this week, but clearly the kids could have used at least a little guidance on this. First Elise and weird Hendrix and now this…) Because while, again, I loved the fiddle player and sax babe, I thought this was all kinds of weird and off the wall. Steven and me were right on the same plane this time around. So, not only did Phil not help himself this week, I think, of all of them, he might have hurt himself. I get that he’s staying true and not letting the Idol Experience change his mind about what he should be singing and how it should be sung, and I do give him madd props for that. But this? Was not good, sweetie. Not good.

Then came the surprise (and delight) of the night for me. Hollie. Who did more to help herself than all of the others combined. And then some. Now, I haven’t talked about the little snippets they did before each Round 2 performance where they got the kids to kind of rag on each other. For the most part, at best, mildly amusing, at worst, yawn fest. It didn’t change my mind, pro or con, or really illuminate anything about the kids…except for Hollie. Not that I learned anything I didn’t already know, but she really came across as every bit as darling and cute as she possibly could. If you have wanted to love her, all along, as I have, and have been pained by watching her not quite reach her goals, as I have, then her little snippets were really heartwarming, because she came across as quite lovable. I hope that helped out. Her singing sure did. She took on another lesser known Queen song, Save Me, and she had a Moment with that one. I happen to love that song and she did a really great, surprising even, job with it. I enjoyed it beginning to end. I haven’t been happy with the judges treatment of her, but, in this case, it was truly uncalled for. She did a great job. Please steer the bus over someone else, for godsake. For me, she compounded the goodness of Round 1 by singing The Climb, which she completely owned. To see her jump like she did when the judges stood up for her second performance just made the night complete. (And thank you, judges. She did earn that. And? A about damn time you give her props.) If she has a chance at staying, this night did that for her. By far, far, far, Most Improved. And the one who did the most to actually help herself move forward. Best two round package of the night.

On the whole, when it was all said and done, Skylar proved she is, indeed, a front runner, adding depth and maturity to her performances. Hollie was my personal favorite, proving it’s never too late to make a stand…and a surge. I think she won new votes last night. Joshua stayed firmly where he’s been, not gaining maybe, but definitely not losing. Phil, on the other hand, shaky night for him. I don’t think he’ll take a Colton-like dive from top to out, but he didn’t gain and might have very well lost votes last night. Still in my Bottom 2, Elise and Jessica. Either could go home and I’m totally fine with that. Please, let it be one of them. I don’t need to hear them sing any more.

What say you, Blog Babes? Who did you love? Were you surprised to find yourself enjoying Idol Does Queen? Who goes home? Who should win? DISH!!

DWTS Results…no surprises here…

As results shows go, it wasn’t a nail biter. For the second week in a row, Dancing With the Stars had a bottom two that didn’t provide a lot of angst in the Dance Duel. However…starting next week? Well, things are gonna get interesting, cuz we only have good dancers left! Good and great, but still!

So, this week, Gladys ended up in the Bottom 2, and because of his gross underscoring, Roshon joined her. I don’t know that it was any real contest there, but I was happy that Carrie Ann threw a vote Gladys’ way, so Roshon says in on a 2-1 vote and Gladys is out. It was clear this didn’t come as a surprise to her, but you could also tell she was deeply disappointed that her adventure in the ballroom had come to an end. I think everyone felt that way. This cast has definitely bonded, and it was good to see all the fond farewell hugs as the show closed.

As to the entertainment - that was the highlight of the show. From the young ballerina born in Sierra Leone - who danced — with Adechike from So You Think You Can Dance!!! — while Natasha Bedingfield sang, to the ethereal performance put on my Travis Wall’s new group, it was performances worth watching. And I am SO ready for this season of SYTYCD to start!! Oh, and we got Anna along with Val and Dmitry, neither of whom have, as yet, learned to button their shirts. A skill set that I, for one, and glad they are sorely lacking.

Not the most scintillating of send off weeks, but a pleasant hour spent. Next up? Classical Week! And the competition gets fiercer as we’re down to 7! Ranking consistently at the top are William and Katherine, with Maria and Donald close on their heels. More up and down are Roshon, Jaleel, and Melissa, but I wouldn’t count either of the boys out. I think Melissa is going to have to really bring something specially entertaining this week or it’s Dance Duel time for her!

Tonight on American Idol it’s the music of Queen! Sung by kids who were probably born after Freddie was already gone, so…interesting night ahead. There’s isn’t the easiest music to sing. More interestingly, will Adam Lambert join Queen for a performance on results night? I’d kinda like that myself. With Colton gone…who will shine this week? Will this be Phil2 and Skylar’s competition? Will Joshua surge to the top? How will Elise, Jessica, and Hollie sort things out, and does it really matter in what order they leave now?

Tune in tomorrow for all the Idol MAC, but rightthisverysecond it’s time to DISH DWTS! Who is your fave? Who wins? Who goes home next week? Will Len, Carrie Ann and Bruno pull up their big judge panties and get a grip this week?
