American Idol….and Cupcakes. It’s a Good Thing.

So, last night was auditions in Milwaukee for American Idol. A mixed bag with some great singers, some singers who will be great when they grow up, some not-so-great singers, and, of course, it wouldn’t be Idol if we didn’t exploit someone’s pain and tragedy.

Great singers… I wasn’t as big a fan of Harvard girl as I wanted to be. She seems nice enough and she can sing, but there’s this perverse part of me that doesn’t want her just to get everything she wants. Go back to the White House girl with three names.

On the other hand CPA guy was totally making me cringe, right up until he stood in front of the judges and turned into Will Ferrell CPA guy who can actually sing. We’ve heard a lot, and seen a lot, regarding them lowering the age limit on one end, but they also raised it on the other end, so it was nice to see some grown ups singing as well.

Speaking of which, I’m not sure if the 15 year old learners permit girl (am I the only one who just can’t remember any of their names?) just sounded shaky and too-young because she was sick, or because she really is just too young. I’m not sure she’ll get eaten alive in Hollywood, I think she’s stronger than she looks, but I’m guessing she’ll come into her own more around 18 than now. Time will tell.

Couldn’t believe deep country voice guy was only 16. He didn’t sound it or look it. That was classic old school country and I think he’s got a legitimate shot, especially with that cute boy aw shucks grin of his.

I thought the guy who looked like he was out for some brewskis with his frat bros (khaki shorts, flip flops) was surprisingly good. I enjoyed him.

And there were a host of others that were good too. That young girl in the beginning with the rhyming name? Liked her a lot. Frustrating, to me, though was when they had to recap some of the few good singers they’d already put through and didn’t take that opportunity to give us some highlights of other golden ticket winners who we get to see scream with joy over and over, but not, you know….sing.

Speaking of screaming with joy…. So, Tiwon gets his golden ticket and bursts out the door into the loving arms of his family, then black leather auntie goes full mental jacket when she gets a charley horse and drama scream queens all over His Moment. Over, and over. And over. Like, over. Now Tiwon — who I remember because he talks about himself in the third person. And, oh yeah, his family had huge signs with his name sparkle sprayed all over them. Already. –was not exactly winning me over, despite his lets-have-fun-by-the-pool singing. But I couldn’t decide if I thought it was hilarious that he wasn’t getting his moment, or if I wanted to give that woman something other than a charley horse to worry about. Now that’s one ego centric all about me family I could do without dealing with. Ever again.

Which brings me to Mr Medina and his Tragic Story. I was dreading it all night. Especially given he comes from the Town of Gokey, who also made me cringe and gnash my teeth for entire season as he milked his dead wife for fame. (You can blame it on the show, but other contestants have managed not to do it, most notably winner David Cook who kept his dying brother out of the press and under the radar pretty damn well for being in the grip of a media machine far more powerful than himself.) And while my heart goes out to the guy, because he was handed a horrible blow, moreso, I’d say, than Mr Gokey, and is to be lauded for his commitment, he shouldn’t be boosted up on a talent show because of his unfortunate circumstances.

And while I know a whole lotta folks hated that they exploited the tragic fiancee by bringing her into the room, and sure, maybe that should have happened with camera’s off, in deference to not exploiting her, who didn’t ask to compete on the show…I did think the judges hearts were in the right place, and, I’m sorry, but I loved Steven for the very heartfelt attention he paid to her. Only Medina knows if all this was the kind of thing she’d be okay with anyway, and I have to imagine she loved getting to meet the judges as he, who knows her best, seemed to think she would… But…yeah, that now needs to be the end of that story arc, and his singing needs to truly be what gets him by. Or not.

Speaking of Steven Tyler…and we always should…my love for him, it grows. And grows. Sure, I’ve been an Aerosmith devotee since they first hit the airwaves, oh, a few years back, so I’m biased, but he truly loves music, and singing, and is a true rock star with all the eccentricities of someone who has lived a life that is so ridiculous we could never hope to wrap our heads around it. And, even more important, to me, he tries hard to preserve the dignity of those before him who can’t sing, but earnestly believe they can. I know Randy is still coming out of the Cowell Era, and he’s heard so many bad singers at this point that he’s numb to that part of the process…but I hearted Steven a whole lot when he took Randy to task for being needlessly cruel when a no thank you that preserved the kid’s dignity would have sufficed. Not that the kid necessarily deserved his dignity preserved, he did after all, ask for it, to some degree. But when you can preserve anyone’s dignity…be the bigger guy. Randy.

One thing I’m very much not missing, in addition to Simon Cowell, is the overall lack of the Angry and Disgruntled this season. Yes, we did have a montage of the Rejected and Pissed Awf, this episode, but it was mercifully brief. And did include that nugget of the mother in what appeared to be a giant lemon costume, berating the cameraman for having the nerve to film her distraught daughter, and in the very same breath tells her daughter to just shut the hell right up already. HA! HA HA!

But, yeah….enough of that now. Show.

What do you all think thus far? Loving the new panel? Hating the new panel? Endlessly amused by what kind of whackjob metaphor Steven will come up with next? For me, it’s been the most enjoyable season in recent and even distant memory. And it’s just the auditions. I hope it bodes well for the show itself when it finally begins.
(Which isn’t until March, by the way. I know. March.)

After Idol, I stayed up waaaaaaaaaay too late and watched #9 ranked Li Na come back and kick the snot out of #1 ranked Caroline Wozniacki in the women’s semifinal of the Australian Open.

I don’t have problems with Caroline having the ranking she does despite no slam wins, she wins a lot of other stuff, consistently, but last night showed that she doesn’t really have the grit and polish quite yet needed to sustain her ranking. I don’t know that she really has a slam in her. Yet. She’s young. I hope, like Andy Murray, she works on building up some true weapons, then shows us all what she’s made of. Li Na, on the other hand, showed us she was made of serious grit and determination on the court, and total hilarity off the court. She throws her husband under the bus saying in her on court interview after her grueling win that she was surprised she did well considering she got no sleep the night before due to his snoring, which she imitated. But when asked what motivated her at match point down to turn the game around, she deadpanned, “Prize money.” Love. Her. First Chinese man or woman, and in fact, first asian man or woman, to reach a grand slam final. Ever. Impressive, Li Na, and you’ve got my vote. Right up until you play Kim Clijsters, who I adore. That’s going to be one great final. Can’t wait!

Do you know what you don’t have to wait for? My next cupcake kitchen adventure!! Yup, it’s posted rightthisverysecond over on Cakes by the Cup blog.

Find out who won a copy of Martha Stewart’s Cupcake cookbook, featured in last week’s post…and how to get in the running for this week’s Blog Candy offering! I’ll even make it easier on ya….just click HERE.

Then come back on over here and DISH! Watching Idol? Still swooning over the Castle Kiss? (Me! Me!) Bummed there was no new Top Chef on last night with more Fabio goodness? Tell all!!

Good morning readers! And bakers! And crafters!

Good morning blog babe readers and bakers!

If you’ve tuned in for some Castle MAC, a tennis update, or just a link to the next chapter in my exciting adventure into the world of baking, you’ll have to keep the cupcake tins warm for a little while longer! Due to deadlines for just about everything plus five more happening this week, I will be posting infrequently this week.

Just what are the deadlines, you ask? Well, for those of you who have read SOME LIKE IT SCOT, and the follow up, my current release, OFF KILTER. and have been asking …yes, I’m almost finished with Shay’s story! Woo hoo! Look for that in this fall’s Christmas anthology, UNWRAPPED! (My editor, however, will be looking for it on her desk February 1st!)

My other deadline? Well, some of you know that in addition to spending my days playing with imaginary amazing hot Scots in kilts and baking the occasional three dozen cupcakes…I also teach craft classes at a local shop, Angela’s Happy Stamper, in Reston Va.

So I thought I’d share with you a few photos of the mini album project I designed and am teaching this week. It’s a small canvas covered binder filled with chipboard and canvas pages and little windowed kraft envelopes that I’ve altered into a little minibook for photos, journaling, etc, using another one of the ridiculously gorgeous paper collections designed by Graphic 45. (And yes…for those who have asked, I occasionally have class kits left over. They are all packaged with full color, step by step photos and very detailed instructions. It’s like…I’m a writer or something, they’re so detailed. Email me at donna@donnakauffman.com if you have questions!) Click on the photos for a closeup.

A lot of fun to make! I love pretty papers!

And, if your baking fingers are twitching, you can look for the next cupcake adventure this Thursday. And yes! That does give you two whole additional days to enter the contest posted in last Tuesday’s Cakes by the Cup Blog! What? You haven’t entered? Well, click here, scroll down, and enter for your chance to win a copy of the cookbook I used in last week’s recipe - Martha Stewart’s Cupcakes! Winner announced Thursday!

Just to whet your appetite for this week’s adventurous recipe, here’s a photo of what’s coming…

Yes, this week’s adventure? The one where I learn to use a pastry bag! Okay, okay…the one where I tried to use a pastry bag…

Hey, it’s a journey…

Then come back here and DISH! Did you SEE that smoking hot kiss between Castle and Beckett last night? Wow-wow-wow! Are you watching Masterpiece Theater’s Downton Abbey and wishing you could go play in that kinda castle? Me, too!

Tennis and Singing and Winners, Oh My!

So, first off, my Grand Slam Fantasy Tennis team is totally letting me down this Australian Open. I’m scraping the bottom of the heap. Internationally. It’s pitiful.

However! On the other side of the coin, both Top Chef and American Idol scored big with me this week. Over on Top Chef, not only is my TV Chef Boyfriend Fabio still in the game AND doing well, but they finally, FINALLY sent Marcel home. I haven’t used the word twerp in a really long time. But every time I see him on my screen, that’s the exact one that comes into my head. I’ve really been enjoying the season so far, and always love the Restaurant Wars episode. Was so happy to see how well Fabio scored from front of house to back. Blaise, on the other hand, works my last nerve with his worry wort stuff. My god he would be a nightmare to live with. I loved how Fabio kept reassuring him and telling him to knock it off…then was right. Ha! Also loved that while all the other chefs are stressing out because it’s such a huge deal, Fabio is just loving every second and enjoying the ride. That’s how you do it. And his reward? Next week? Italian, mi amores. Cannot wait!

Over in Idol...so how great is this new panel? I was happy to look at the news and various bb’s the morning after the debut and see how much everyone else was enjoying it. A friend of mine (shout out to Angela, who owns Angela’s Happy Stamper, where I teach my craft classes, and who happens to be an amazing singer in her own right) summed it up perfectly to me. She said that this season’s auditions rounds were a lot more Extreme Home Makeover than Housewives of New Jersey. EXACTLY! Loving Steven Tyler and Jennifer, and even Randy seems more relevant in the current set up. Not only do I not miss Simon in this current incarnation, I’m really thankful that he’s not part of the process.

Yes, yes, the critics had to trot out the fact that Idol ONLY had 26.1 million viewers this debut. Only? Really? And yes, that’s down from last year’s debut that was just shy of 30 million, and with all the hype, etc. But still? Slammed the competition. And really, isn’t that all that matters in television? Being number 1? I don’t know that it matters by how much you’re number one, or compared to any other season. (Television in general has been losing audience numbers across the board for years as other forms of entertainment now compete.) And as long as you can say you’re the number 1 show, you can charge a ton of money for ad time and your show isn’t cancelled. I’m not exactly sure how any of that can be termed anything other than successful. Massively so in Idol’s case. So, shut up TV critics.

Last night…loved red headed guy, loved music teacher guy. There were a lot of good stories. I haven’t fallen head over movie poster for anyone quite yet, but there is potential for sure. At the very least, it’s been nice to hear a lot of great singing, regardless of how far they progress individually. It’s Happy TV. And I’m all about that.

Speaking of Happy! Let’s announce this week’s Free Stuff Friday Winner! Thank you all for entering! This week’s winner gets a free book from my website bookshelf. Just send me an email at donna@donnakauffman.com with a few title ideas (in case I’m out of your first choice) and an address.

And this week’s winning Blog Babe is? Victoria Lee! Woo hoo! Congratulations!!

Also? Still a chance to win a copy of the cookbook I used in this week’s Cupcake Adventure over on Cakes by the Cup Blog. New Adventure posted Tuesday, so you have through Monday night to enter. Just click here, and leave a comment on this week’s blog post and you could win a copy of Martha Stewart’s Cupcake cookbook!!

Good luck! Then come back here and DISH! Are you watching Idol? Loving it? Not feeling it? What about Top Chef? Fabio adoration aside, who do you think has a chance to win it this All Star Season? I’m thinking Angelo, Blaise (unless anxiety makes him self destruct again), Angry Dale, and (yay!) Carla all have a shot. Who is your fave?

American Idol is back. Only better. It is, too!

Okay, so the water cooler talk this morning is going to be all about Stephen, J Lo, and, maybe even Randy. Okay, maybe it’s just MY water cooler. But this is MY blog. And THIS? Is American Idol: the morning after.

So….the thing is, I love Stephen Tyler. Have loved Aerosmith since I was far younger than I want to admit, because that makes me almost as old as Stephen Tyler. And not as tan. Or as highlighted.

I have no idea what the general consensus will be today about the “new” Idol, but ask me? About. Time. I thought there was an undeniable “star power” vibe to the panel, Randy came into his own when paired with actual, you know, musicians, and they seemed far more a collaborative panel than a series of disjointed reactions, couched in something mean delivered in a British accent. And I often agreed with Simon. Maybe not the delivery or choice of words, but the general sentiment. Did I miss him last night?

Simon who?

Yeah. No. I thought it was more fun, more interesting, and Stephen Tyler is hilarious, J Lo too tenderhearted, and Randy the voice of reason. Dawg.

Yeah. I loved it. Fun. There’s a concept. Not brutal, not humiliating, not cringe inducing (I’m talking about the panel, not the “singers.”)

So, I’m on board for the season. Morning After Commentary? Starts Now.

Are you with me??

And, speaking of which, have you entered this week’s contests? Yep, plural. There are two. The one here, to win a free book from my website bookshelf, ends tomorrow, so hurry up and get your entry in. Scroll down to Monday’s blog for the details. Over on my Cupcake Adventures in Baking Blog at Cakes By The Cup Blog, I’m giving away a copy of Martha Stewart’s Cupcakes to a lucky commenter to this week’s posted adventure. Winner announced when next week’s adventure is posted on Tuesday. But you’re all in the entering mode anyway, so why not go over there and take care of it now? Who knows, you could be a Double Winner and be all reading AND baking!

Then pop back over here and DISH! What did you think of the show? Which singers did you like? I liked the twin kid, the kid who thought it was his destiny since he was seven, and yes, the uber sweet “yo yo dawg” southern belle. Just because she was so surrealistically earnest. You?

If it’s Tuesday, that means another Cupcake Adventure!

This has been a great Tuesday so far. Which, given there is at least an inch of ice coating everything on the planet outside, is really saying something. But it gave me the perfect excuse to stay inside and get the next Cupcake Adventure posted!

New cookbook giveaway this week, so check out Cakes By The Cup Blog and comment on today’s post to get in the running. (Scroll down to yesterday’s blog post right here for details on how to get in the running for the Free Stuff Friday contest!) Which means I get to research Man Candy Candidates all weekend. Sigh. Yep. I give and I give…. I’m a giver.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Top Chefs and Bottom Feeders…

So, last night I got the chance to catch up on Top Chef: All Stars.

Last week? My fan fave Fabio revealed that, back at home, he has a pet tortoise. Which he walks using a chihuahua leash! We get film clip package and everything. If I didn’t already heart him for pure entertainment value, this would have put me over. Even better? After joking when it was announced that they’d be cooking Asian food that “if you wanted me to pack up and leave, you could just tell me” (Asian, definitely not in his Italian wheelhouse) he ends up in the Top 3. Fun week for the asides (love Carla’s comments on “Daddy” aka Tom having to come back to kitchen to check up on the kids…) but not so much for the actual challenge. In fact, I think this was the poorest overall performances by chefs in a challenge to date.

Which was why I was happy to see that this week’s episode was all about happy chefs fishing trips and yummy beach party fish fries. Definitely a more engaging vibe and I enjoyed the upbeat change of mood. What I didn’t enjoy? Being reminded, repeatedly, that Marcel is a douche. Not that we didn’t know this, but wow, M. I thought it was kind of hilarious when he’s drunken raging against Dale, essentially for winning the previous week’s elimination challenge, and part of his rant was something like “if you can’t handle it, don’t whine about it…” And I was like, um, Marcel…so kinda like what you’re doing RIGHT NOW? Whiny McWhinerton?

Then when Carla wins the challenge and an amazing trip to Amsterdam she pops back into the room super excited about her win, because, duh, Amsterdam!! and sure, maybe it could have been tempered a bit, she’s always so pleasantly surprised when she wins and I think that and the trip just put her over the moon. So, of course, Marcel has to be the ass in the room and comment that he hopes she’ll forgive him for not congratulating her given that means he’s on the bottom two teams. Shut up, Marcel. And, naturally, Carla is immediately subdued and worried that she shouldn’t have celebrated. Celebrate, Carla! Do an end zone dance, right in Marcel’s face, and enjoy it! You won. He didn’t. It’s how it works.

In the end, Marcel, Richard (who, honestly Richard, enough with trying to be ghetto street with that punk hairstyle. It’s like watching Opie trying to be all ‘hood. Epic. Fail.) and Fabio escape elimination, and they send whiny pain in the ass Jaime home (thank you, judging panel!! About time!) and, unfortunately, Tiffani. I got the elim there, but wish, of course, that it had been Marcel instead.

Oh, and Jaime? You of the skip a challenge and hide under the table during another challenge and I can’t cook if it’s not a scallop or a soup have the nerve to say you think that three chefs teaming up on one dish is sort of a cop out? Well then…I guess you’d know all about that, then, right? Wow. I was happy to see the montage of the other chefs mentioning her bratty behavior as well. At least it wasn’t just me who felt that way. Buh bye now.

Also what else did I like to see? Tre. Fishing. Man’s gotta flex some muscle to do that and that man? Mmm, he’s got some muscles. And, my romance writer heart did flutter a bit when he talked about missing his wife, because that meant he didn’t have his best friend by his side, sharing the experience.

Tre, honey….you’re Top Chef in my book.

Ahhh. So, what did you think? Did you think Antonia owed her teammates some constructive criticism? Did you think she even realized there were problems with their dishes? Did you agree on sending Tiffani home? Are you loving Carla and Fabio as much as I am? I’m missing seeing more of the remaining Tiffany. Hope she gets more screen time now that we’re down to ten chefs.

Oh, and if you haven’t entered either of my contests this week (there are two, you ask? Yes, two!) then skip down to Monday’s blog post to find out how to enter this week’s Free Stuff Friday contest and win a free book from my website bookshelf — today is the last day to enter, winner announced in tomorrow’s blog post!
