And the competition really starts to heat up! Literally!

Hello Happy Readers and Erstwhile Cupcake Bakers!

So, I have the very latest word from the Amazon Judging Team!! They held their Official Taste Test for the three finalists in The Original Cupcake Recipe Contest: the Chocolate Meringue from Laura, Sweet Peach Tea from Stephanie, and The Fluffy Elvis from Kelli!

AND??? They are in heated debate, dead-tied between two of them. So, how are they going to decide who wins? Well, by having their very own Final Two Bake-Off Contest, that’s how!!

Oh the drama and the excitement! It’s a nail-biter…or perhaps that’s a frosting nibbler! I don’t know, but I’m SUPER excited to find out who made the Final Two (no, they wouldn’t tell me!) and who the eventual winner is! Can you even stand it? I think I need to sit down and have a cupcake and a glass of cold milk….

Because of this latest development, we’re going to give Team Amazon Bakers an extra day to get their baking and tasting done. They’ve been provided with copies of all three finalist’s recipes and will give us the official word by Friday, July 1. So, only an additional day!

And then we’ll be able to announce which cupcake recipe will appear in the back of SWEET STUFF, Book 2 of the Cupcake Club Romance series! I will be in NYC this week, where, of course, I will no doubt test out some of the city’s finest cupcakes (mmm, Crumbs, here I come!) but will return in time to announce the winner, right here, this Friday.

Stay tuned!! What is that? You didn’t enter a cupcake recipe, but you’d like a chance to be a winner, too? Well, I can take care of that. You can enter this week’s Free Stuff Friday contest and win a free book from my website bookshelf. Just drop an email to donna@donnakauffman.com with “I feel like a winner!” in the subject line. I will draw one name from the pile and announce it here Friday as well.

Good luck to all!!

Cupcakes w/ Chamomile Tea? Hello, Friday!

Hello Happy Readers & Cupcake Bakers!

Time is counting down to the announcement of who Amazon chose as the winner of The Original Cupcake Recipe Contest! Tune in next Wednesday, June 30 to find out the results! I will be in NYC to make the announcement!

The winner will see her recipe published in book 2 of the Cupcake Club Romance series, SWEET STUFF, and receive an advance copy of book 1, SUGAR RUSH, and book 2! The runners up with also receive copies of SWEET STUFF.

In the meantime, are you ready for a new cupcake recipe?

This week I am sharing one of the entry recipes in the contest. This one comes from Sarah Ratchford-Jenkins from Virginia and is her Hot Tea Cupcake recipe. And let me tell you, YUMMM!!! It was only my second time infusing flavor into something, this time it was tea into milk. Sarah used an organic chamomile with lavender in hers. I couldn’t find the lavender blend, so chose chamomile with honey and vanilla.

I have to tell you, I loved the whole tea-in-milk infusion so much, that I now want to run out and try it with other flavored teas. (I’m thinking pomegranate next!) The resulting cupcake is SO moist and yum, and the tea adds such a wonderful layer of flavor to the cake. You’ll have to try this one out yourself!

Hot Tea Cupcakes:

2 cups whole milk
2 teabags
(Sarah used an organic chamomile with lavender, I went with chamomile w/ honey & vanilla)
2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3 large eggs
(the fresher the better)

Tea Infusion:
1. In a medium saucepan pour milk and add two teabags. Bring to an “almost boil”. Boiling will scorch the milk and change the taste, you do NOT want that. When the milk is hot and there is a light froth around the edges, set aside and allow to cool to room temperature before using. About 2 hours. Remember to leave the teabags in to steep.

Steps:
1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Line 24 cupcake tins with paper liners. (Sarah went all purple to match the lavender in the tea)
2. Beat together 1 1/4 cup of the tea milk (reserving the rest for the icing), flour, sugar, shortening, oil, baking powder, salt, and eggs with mixer on low for 30 seconds. Scrape the sides of the bowl.
3. At this time if you want to add a color to your cakes add food coloring, add a couple drops at a time until you reach your desired color. Slowly increase mixer to high. Beat 3 minutes.
4. Fill cupcake liners about 2/3 full. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until a toothpick in the center comes out clean.

Donna’s Notes: When making the batter, I chose to mix the shortening, oil, and sugar together first, then added eggs, one at a time, until blended. I alternated adding the milk with the whisked-together dry ingredients, so the flour wouldn’t get over-beaten (that whole gluten activation thing we learned about a few weeks ago!) The cupcakes came out fluffy, moist, and light!

Hot Tea Icing:

Milk left from the reserved
1/2 cup of shortening
1/2 cup of butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 to 5 cups of powdered sugar

1. In a large bowl cream together the shortening, butter, and vanilla.
2. Slowly blend in the sugar. Start with 4 cups.
3. Add milk 1 tablespoon at a time. You want the frosting to be light and fluffy. If needed add more milk or more sugar for you desired consistency and flavor.
4. At this point you can add food coloring to desired color. I find the gel coloring works the best.
5. Pipe onto completely cooled cupcakes.

Donna’s Notes: We all know my madd piping skillz leave a lot to be desired, so, obviously from the photo of my cupcake above I went with the spatula approach! I really loved these cupcakes. A simple added infusion of flavor really knocks this recipe up a notch and opens the door to a wide variety of flavor interpretations. I can’t wait to hear what you all think of it!

See you all back here next Wednesday for the Big Announcement! And thank you, Sarah, for sharing your delicious recipe!!

Cupcake Contest Finalists Announced!

I’m thrilled to be able to announce the three finalists in The Original Cupcake Recipe contest!

There were entries from all over the country, and as far away as The Netherlands! It was a very tough job, they all looked incredibly yummy, but I whittled the entries down to six (it was all I could do to decide that much!) then wheedled my fabulous editor (and fellow baker!) Alicia Condon into assisting on cutting the list down to the final three. So many great recipes to choose from! Samples of all three cupcake recipes will be shipped out to Amazon.com headquarters in Seattle and they will decide who the winner is! (That will be a fun business meeting to attend!) We’ll be announcing the winner on June 30th!

So, congratulations go out to:

Laura Fulcher for her Chocolate Meringue cupcakes recipe
Stephanie Gamverona for her Sweet Peach Tea cupcake recipe
Kelli Ulrich for her The Fluffy Elvis cupcake recipe

Way to go, ladies!!

Thank you all SO much for entering!! I hope to share with you, over the coming months, some of the other entries into the contest, starting with the two runners up, over on my Cakes by the Cup Blog where I share a new cupcake recipe every week. I’ll be in contact with you directly if I’m going to use your submitted recipe, to get your okay, and let you know when it will be featured on the site.

All of the finalists will receive signed advance copies of both the first two Cupcake Club Romances; SUGAR RUSH, available this December 27, and SWEET STUFF - which will feature the winning recipe!! - out on January 27.

And! Any future blog participant, will also receive a signed advance copy of one of the Cupcake Club Romance series.

I haven’t forgotten the Free Stuff Friday contest this week! Thanks to all who entered for the chance to win a free book. The winner is? Lola V!! Congratulations, Lola!! Just email me at donna@donnakauffman.com with a list of a few title ideas (in case I’m out of your first choice) and an address.

So Do You Think You Can Love This Season of Dance?

I believe I do! But first I want to thank all of you enthusiastic cupcake bakers for entering your recipes in the Original Cupcake Recipe contest! My editor and I are busy trying to decide how in the heck we’re going to whittle it down to a handful of finalists, before baking up a storm and shipping cupcakes to Amazon for the final judging round. Yes, it’s a tough job….but I’m SO glad I get to be the one to do it!!

Speaking of judging.. last night on So You Think You Can Dance, the judging panel was an interesting mix. I enjoyed having Megan Mullally as a guest judge. And, while I’m not opposed to having Mary the Squealer back on the panel, and I get she thinks we love her shouting and screeching (not me, Mary), the problem I have with her is that, I actually think she does have insight to contribute, given her personal background in the industry. So, I’d be REALLY thrilled if she’d dial it down and just deliver her critiques in a more rational manner. The only time during the entire program I didn’t fast forward through her commentary was when she discussed the beautiful routine between Marko and Melanie. More of that, Mary, please…with the occasional woo!, and we’ll be fine.

So, the routines left me kind of all over the place last night. There is no doubt this entire ensemble is remarkably talented, and perhaps that was part of it. I think I enjoy it more when they are given styles outside their personal strength, and last night, an overwhelming majority stayed right in their wheelhouse, which is lovely to watch, but maybe not as interesting or compelling. That said, one of the routines that tied for my favorite of the night featured two contemporary dancers, dancing contemporary. So, go figure. But Marko is my fave (bullet in shoulder guy) and pairing him with Melanie of the gorgeous lines and movement is going to make for a season of stunning. So, I’m a Big Fan.

My other favorite routine was, surprisingly for me, Nick and Iveta. Nick is a super charmer - he won me over in the only week we were given a chance to meet him - so it was a double joy last night to see him just attack that quick step. One of the most enjoyable quicksteps on the show, ever. Well done, Nick!

Most of the pairings, I thought, were pretty decent. At least none of them jumped up and made me shudder. It will be interesting to see, as they are pushed more out of their comfort zone, who does well, and who doesn’t. There was some undeniable chemistry with some pairs (definitely with Marko/Melanie, but others as well) and I can’t help but wonder how the others will come to be over time.

Of course, with Robert (yum!) standing in (or is that “dancing in”) for an injured Mitchell last night, made me wonder who the other All Stars will be this season. I’m perfectly happy to watch the couples emerge as they are now, but am excited about the future potential when we get to the All Star stage.

So…who were your favorites? Which routines/dancers didn’t do much for you? Are you loving the choreographers? I’m pretty happy so far in that regard, but hope they don’t use only a small pool. All in all, a pretty good night! What say you, happening blog babes?

Also, don’t forget to enter this week’s Free Stuff Friday contest. Win a free book! Check out Monday’s post for the details. Winner announced…well, Friday. :)

Then drop back by here and DISH!

Cupcake Contest Deadline Day! And? Singing!

No worries, I won’t be the one singing! First, the public service cupcake announcement. We’re finally here, the last day of The Original Cupcake Recipe Contest! You have until midnight tonight, EST, to enter your famous (infamous?) cupcake recipe and get the chance to see it published in my upcoming Cupcake Club Romance, SWEET STUFF! Click HERE for the details!

Okay, so show of hands, who watched The Voice last night? I think it was alternately great and a complete hot mess. A few of the performances were wonderful, but a number of them left me scratching my head or just plain disappointed. Highlights of the night were Vicci’s rendition of Jolene, which was completely there, from start to finish, and Javier’s soaring, if at times over mellisima’d, Angel. What voices the two of them have! I also enjoyed Casey’s Black Horse & Cherry Tree. After that? Steep decline for me. We also learned that even faced with truly unfortunate performances (yes, Curtis, I’m looking at you) these “judges” are never going to actually, you know…judge. Team Leaders they are, but judges…not so much.

I admire that both Cee Lo and Adam took risks with some of the song selections, really trying to give the artist a chance to shine and be unique, but, for me, this failed more than it succeeded. The most successful performances of the night, as I mentioned above, were all right in the wheelhouse of the singers, and I think that might have ultimately been the better decision.

Worst offender, yes, was having yummy Country Boy Curtis try and put a country spin on Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love. Absolutely train wreck for me. I never could find the rhythm he was going for in that. Interesting idea, horrible translation. On the same scale, though Tori & Taylor, the sister act, delivered Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy very cutely and serviceably, I don’t know how that did them any favors, establishing them in any kind of marketable genre. I think they were cannon fodder anyway, up against some very formidable opponents, so at least, unlike Curtis, it was fun to watch and entertaining.

Both Devon Barley and Jeff Jenkins got songs they should have been able to deliver handily, but Devon’s nerves got to him, so Stop and Stare was sharp and flat all over the place. He’s earnest and adorable as all get out, but that was end of line for him, I believe. And, very unfortunately, the same might be true for Jeff, who was in his wheelhouse with Jesus Take the Wheel, but started out in such a low range, he lost a lot of ground, then spent the second half trying to recover it.

The final disappointment for me was Nakia. I love this guy, love his style of singing, and think he killed it on the group sing….but what was that song he was singing? And what was with the fire girls? I mean, sure, the song was Sex on Fire, duh, but…. there was nothing about that non-song that did him any favors whatsoever. He sang the heck out of it, but so what? What was that? A million songs could have showcased that guy, but that nothing-special one probably killed him. Big boo, to that song choice.

I did enjoy both group sings, very entertaining, and, overall, it was a more enjoyable night of performances than not. I’m just not sure most of them did the performers any real favors. However, ending on a high note, I was thrilled with the finalists from Team Xtina and Team Blake. I was beyond happy when America proved they loved Bev McClellan as much as I do. Wow, awesome! And I was very happy when Xtina saved Frenchie. Sisters are doin’ it for themselves!

Over on Team Blake… though I wouldn’t have agreed with the choice, I knew from the huge numbers of downloads she was posting on iTunes, that Dia was going through, and that’s cool. But I figured poor awkward stage performer Xenia was doomed then, as they are both similar in genre. And I love Xenia’s voice so much more. (Hey, I don’t plan on having to watch her sing, I just want to hear her sing…so I don’t care how dorky she is on stage.) So, color me shocked when Blake’s heart proved to be in the very same place as mine! I don’t know how the semi-finals works, but now you’ve got two soft spoken youngster singers, going up against two powerhouse, well seasoned vocalists. That’ll be…interesting.

I am looking forward to finding out how America voted on the remaining two teams, and who the judges will save when the time comes. I can’t imagine Vicci and Javier won’t get through, which is one from each team. On Team Adam, I’d add Casey with Javier. And on Team Cee Lo, well…I wouldn’t put anyone through with Vicci. I’d rather put Jeff through from Team Adam as the eighth semi finalist. So…quandary! Not based on last night, but on overall performances, my alternate pick on Team Cee Lo is easily Nakia. And, given I don’t think the girls stood out enough and Curtis’ truly off track performance, he might have a shot. We’ll see!

Don’t forget to also enter this week’s Free Stuff Friday contest and win a free book! See Monday’s blog post for all the details. And, mea culpa, I have been horribly behind in getting out winners books the past few weeks, but there is a Big Post Office Outing happening tomorrow! So keep an eye on those mailboxes. :)

And now? DISH! Who did you love? Who made you cringe? And did you watch Masterchef? Some interesting players this season. I’m in!

It’s the Cupcake Countdown!

How did it get to be the middle of June already? Well, the good news this morning, just outside the Nation’s Capital in the lovely Virginia countryside where I reside, is that the humidity finally broke and it was glorious jogging along the Potomac River this morning. I hope this weather lingers for awhile. I could get used to this!

Besides, with all the cupcakes I’ve been baking (and testing, and sampling, and testing some more…) I need to keep jogging every morning!

And, speaking of cupcakes (because, I’m always speaking of cupcakes) this week marks the deadline of the Original Cupcake Recipe contest. You have until midnight, EST, this Wednesday, June 15, to get me your recipe! I will be choosing three semi-finalists this Friday, and sending samples on to Amazon the beginning of next week for the final judging round. The winner gets his/her cupcake recipe published in my upcoming Cupcake Club Romance, SWEET STUFF!! I know, how cool is that?? The winner, and the remaining semi-finalists, will all also win a signed, advance copy of the book. The excitement, it just never ends around here!

For all the fine print contest details, click on the CONTEST! link up there under my smiling face and read all about it. Then email me your favorite recipe to donna@donnakauffman.com!! I’ll announce the semi-finalists here on Friday.

And do you know what else I’m going to announce on Friday? Why, the Free StuFf Friday free book winner, that’s what! Or…who, in this case. To enter that one, you don’t have to bake a thing, just send me an email to donna@donnakauffman.com with “Who needs to bake when you can be reading?” in the subject line. Winner receives a book from my website bookshelf.

Stay tuned this week for all the So You Think You Can Dance ranting recaps, and whatever else I get sucked into watching!

Enjoy this glorious Monday….and DISH!

Legion of Extraordinary Dancers, indeed!

First of all, kudos to the So You Think You Can Dance editors for somehow cramming an entire Vegas Week worth of tape into a single 2 hour program. In fact, thank you for zooming us straight through audition and whittling rounds and just GETTING ON WITH IT already. Sure, I’d have liked to see more actual, you know, dancing in Wednesday night’s show, but last night we got on with the real deal and that works for me.

There were the requisite new faces, and a few cuts that were painful (Lil O, sob!) but that was balanced out (for me) by sending home folks such as the still ever-so-arrogant Jeremiah (thank you, panel, thankyouverymuch) but giving us new-to-me dancers like Nick the Hot Tapper, and can’t-wait-to-see-more-of-you Alexander. There aren’t any dancers in the Top 20 who aren’t capable. Though some do make me roll my eyes in already wearying fatigue. Yes, I’m looking at you Broadway Jess and Woo Boy Urkel. Dial that down, it’s lost it’s shine.

And sure, the ladies this season are fierce, but the guys have a lot of charisma and stage presence, probably the edge that having so many street dancers in the final line up lends to their group, where the women are all more classically trained, which lends them more a plug-n-play type feel. So, while insanely good, I think the ladies are going to have to work a bit to stand out from their very talented crowd.

I loved the format last night that intermingled watching the final 20 get their good news, with grouped performances of the finalists on the live stage, with audience and judging panel in full swing. While there were some performances that were more engaging (to me) than others, all of them were pretty outstanding in showcasing what kind of talent we have this year. Who knew there could finally be a tap dancer who kept me riveted? Hello, Nick! And the LXD choreographer, Christopher Scott? Yeah, he can be on call every week as far as I’m concerned. Loved. His. Work. The Top 10 guys routine was filled with door slamming, sleek suit wearing awesomeness. I watched it twice and I might need to go jut watch that one again. Dave Scott’s hip hop routine was so much energetic and high flying, but it was Sonja Tayeh’s first routine with Marko was my fave on the night. When the ladies leaned back and Marko entered the stage with that leap over them? Yeah, I’m in. And the final pose? Absolute fave. Though watching Pasha take the stage again, in all of his tight fitting glory, left me fanning myself in a very good way. I even, though I’m loathe to say it, enjoyed Tyce’s show-closing Top 20 routine, crowded and overdone as it was. Probably because I love Annie Lennox’s Little Bird. Which also reminded me about that adjunct reason I love this show…I download all kinds of new and remembered music!

It’s gonna be a good season, y’all! Even though we won’t get Alex Freaking Wong back. He tweeted last night that he wasn’t medically cleared, which makes me sad for myself, but moreso for him, as that has to mean he hasn’t been back with his ballet company, either. I hope the injury isn’t a career ender! And I hope Nigel brings him back in some fashion, so we can get our Alex Freaking Fix. (You don’t know who Alex Freaking Wong is? You Tube his routine with Twitch last season, and be prepared to smile as you watch this classically trained ballet dancer take on hip hop! Still gives me goosebumps!)

I’m excited to see who gets paired up next week, and also super excited to think about what All Stars will join the program when we get down to the Top 10. It’s gonna be a good one, this go, Blog Babes!

Also - don’t forget, deadline for the Cupcake Recipe Contest is next Wednesday, June 15, so get your recipes in! You could get your recipe published in my upcoming Cupcake Club Romance, SWEET STUFF! Amazon has stepped up to be the final round judge! Click on the CONTEST! link up there under my smiling face to see all the details.

And thank you all for entering this week’s Free Stuff Friday contest! The winner of a free book from my website bookshelf is? Fabulous Blog Babe Tina P!! Woot! Send me an email with your address and a few title ideas (in case I’m out of your first choice) and I’ll add your book to the post office pile!

So, any early SYTYCD favorites? Who do you want to see paired up? Who do you just want to SEE? DISH!

Singin’, Dancin’ & Cookin’!

The summer season is finally kicking off!

How much are you loving So You Think You Can Dance? I love that they’ve finally figured out that we’re far more entertained by watching great dancers than the weirdsmobiles. The level of dancing is crazy this season, and, so far, seems like the ladies have a slight edge. But who knows? Last year I thought the guys had it, and, for the most part, they did…but in the end, it wasn’t a guy that won the season. Also loving that we dispensed with the audition rounds in two quick weeks of shows, and, starting tonight, we’re already in the Vegas rounds, baby! I’ve read that Uncle Nigel’s plan this season is to have a Top 20, which he’ll pair up to perform together. Then, once we’re down to the Top 10, he’ll bring in the All Stars, and match them up that way. I think that’s a fantastic blend of the past few seasons, and can’t wait to see how that pans out. One thing I am anxiously awaiting though, is word on Alex “Freaking” Wong. Is he back? Will he be an All Star? What’s going on with our favorite injured dancer? Nigel has teased that we’ll hear from him…but in what manner has yet to be revealed!!

Over in the hellfire kitchens, MasterChef has cranked up a new season. I watch this one more somewhat more removed than I do from other competition shows, it doesn’t “hook” me, but I still find it compelling enough to watch. I’m more invested in The Next Food Network Star. I love that the winner gets his or her own show. Thems huge stakes, my blog babe friends. I’m not so sure about the crop of contenders this season, though. I think, for the most part, many more of them are telegenic than last season, and they all (sans Howie, who has already exited) appear to be excellent chefs. So, we’ll see. So far, I’m enjoying Orchid, the fishmonger guy, and the chef who was his teammate in the commercial round, whose name I can’t remember. One thing that never ceases to amaze and confound me, though, is how contestants come on to the program–and granted, as I mentioned, the stakes are huge, so I get why the claws come out–but it’s like they completely forget that the actual prize is a television program in which WE the viewers have to LIKE them enough to want to WATCH them. What makes for good tv and good drama (though for me, “drama” isn’t “good”) in a reality competition, is not the same thing that makes for a good cooking show. Dial it down already with the claws and fangs. There are several competitors who you couldn’t pay me to watch. I can barely stand them competing, and would never watch their shows. Of course, they haven’t a prayer of winning. When did “nice” stop being “good?” At the moment, Orchid is the new Aarti, and it’s her party to lose.

And finally, we have The Voice. I’ve been enjoying this program and am glad they’re finally getting on with the live competition. But, is it just me, or other than the initial round when the judges had their backs turned while choosing their initial teams…doesn’t it seem like they’re just making this up as they go along? Of course, I think they were surprised when the show became an instant hit, and are now scrambling to try and figure out the best way to keep us hooked. In fact, until last night’s first live show, we had NO idea how these next rounds even worked. I’m sure they didn’t either. :) As it turns out, two of the four teams sang last night, and we get to vote. Next week, two members of each team are sent home. The highest vote getter stays, and the team leader gets to pick one to stay. The other two, see ya later. I kind of like that we don’t get all the say, but at least some of the say. I wish Dancing With the Stars would adopt more of this kind of thing. My favorite forum is how SYTYCD handles it. Public vote decides the Bottom 3, judges pick who, from that group, goes home.

So, last night, it’s a toss up for me. I think Team Xtina crushed Team Blake, overall, but her team is more cohesive whereas Blake’s is, stylistically, all over the map, so it’s harder to rally for his peeps. However, that said, they can all sing their little (and not so little) fannies off. I think Blake’s rocker is a good guy, but he’s generic. His voice is not distinctive and he won’t stand out on radio. He’d be awesome in a band, but is not a front man. Not a memorable one, anyway. I love what Dia did with the Kanye song, but, again, her voice isn’t truly distinctive or memorable, either. I only say that, because her teammate, Xenia, is incredibly distinctive. That’s a memorable voice. I just hope the rest of her can catch up. She’s endearingly awkward, which was never more apparent then in their group performance. I got a kick out of them doing a Maroon 5 song, but it otherwise paled in comparison to Xtina’s Lady Marmalade power performance. Which brought the house down, then down again. Perfect song choice. Rounding out Blake’s team is his sole country dude, Patrick Thomas, who again, cute as the dickens, but not distinctive enough either, for me, to see him with a huge radio/recording career. I still wish Blake had gone with the kid with the glasses on that sparring match,

Over on Xtina’s team, little Raquel is just a pocket pussycat doll star with a massive voice. It’s not particularly distinctive, but it’s so huge and she’s got the rest of the package to go with it, I don’t see why she can’t join the ranks of pop starlets out there. The one who really grabbed me, though, every time, though, was Beverly McClellan. I expected her to be more ostracizing, and yet I completely could not take my eyes off of her and the crowd went all kinds of nuts for her. Dynamic, distinctive, and she owned the stage every time she opened her mouth. Who’d have thought she’d be the key vocal on Lady Marmalade? I love how they’re styling her, too, though I liked the Marmalade outfit even better than her solo one, which was cool. I was sure that, like on Marmalade, Frenchie would lose a little of her edge in comparison to Beverly, but then she came out all leather and spice in the end there and I was like, uh oh, here we go. Unfortunately, though a good performance overall, for me, it sounded a little sharp in delivery, so….edge still goes to Beverly. Frenchie remains more a massive Broadway talent to me. And that leaves Lily who ends up being an afterthought on this team, the least distinctive of the four, despite also possessing a powerhouse voice. She rubs me the wrong way, always has, and I don’t know that it will change. Maybe in a girl group, a la the Bangles or something, her vibe would be more accessible.

All in all, it was a really good night. I give the edge to Team Xtina for the more memorable performances, but overall, my faves were one from each team. My picks would be Xenia from Team Blake, and Beverly from Team Xtina, with Raquel, for marketability alone, a very close third. Going home for me would be Dia and Rocker Dude (see, I can’t even remember his name) from Team Blake, and from Team Xtina, Lily and, sadly, Frenchie. We’ll see! Can’t wait for next week to see waht the other two teams bring. Some of my fave performers are on those two teams.

But tonight, it’s Vegas baby, yeah! Oh, and show of hands who watched White Collar and Covert Affairs season openers last night? I have them all saved on my DVR and as soon as I get done telling my imaginary friends what to do for the next chapter…I get to watch those imaginary characters cavort about. Not a bad day. Not a bad day at all. Speaking of which, for all of you who have enjoyed my paranormal books, I can tease to you that I’m currently working on a project for Harlequin featuring a hero who is, well….out of this world! Just sayin. :)

Hellooooo! After a few weeks of topsy-turvy, it’s good to be back!

Super exciting news on the Original Cupcake Recipe Contest front! Amazon has agreed to be the final judges!! I know!! How cool is that? We will narrow it down to the top three recipes, then send along samples to Amazon, who will name the winner on June 30. Wahoo!

The deadline to submit is June 15, so strap on those aprons and keep those recipes coming! Click on the CONTEST! link or head on over to Cakes By The Cup Blog and read all about it.

And while you’re entering contests, send an email my way to donna@donnakauffman.com with “It’s about TIME!” in the subject line, and you’ll be in the running to win a free book from my website bookshelf. Winner announced in this blog right here on Free Stuff Friday!

Check out the Cakes by the Cup Blog later this afternoon for a great way to use all that zuchinni you have popping up in your garden! Yep. Zuchinni. In cupcakes. Trust me, super yum! AND another chance to win a free book!

Good luck!
