Have a great weekend everyone!

Another one bites the mirrorball dust…

So, last night on DWTS results show, we had a Footloose revival, which I kinda enjoyed, and watched the Hough sibs dance, also enjoyable… Then it was mostly fast-forward to the evening’s conclusion. I do like to hear the on-floor comments the dancers are saying to one another during and just after their performances, so I pause for those…sometimes. Still think JR is being unfairly targeted, so was glad he was safe. Uber glad my favorite swashy-buckling pirate, Carson, was also safe. Not at all surprised that Chaz was safe. I think he has the strong underdog contingent behind him now. David made it through, as did Hope. Which left Rob , Nancy and Chynna on the chopping block. Honestly wasn’t sure from that group who was going home. I was kind of hoping that Chynna was just in there because of her flub the night before, for the sake of drah-ma…. but then Nancy was announced safe….and I didn’t really think Rob would go out…and I was right. In the end, it was Chynna. She accepted it gracefully, as you knew she would. I felt more sorry for Tony, once again being out of the running.

It’s funny, but normally I get frustrated when bad dancers continue onward while better dancers get cut, but for the first time, this season I don’t mind so much. I’m not finding myself emotionally connected to those better dancers who went home. Chynna was lovely, but kind of stiff. Kristin had the unfortunate unluck to get Mark as a partner, how danced all over her. So, for pure entertainment sake - and, let’s face it, this ain’t the Dance Olympics here, it’s ONLY about entertainment - I’m okay with not seeing them dance again. I enjoy Carson and look forward to his humor and zaniness, and love or hate Chaz, there is something endearing about how hard he’s trying. I don’t necessarily enjoy his actual dance as much as I find joy in watching him try. I sincerely doubt either he or Carson will win, so I’m fine with them getting to stick around a while longer.

I think with past bad dancers, they also had the misfortune to be people we really (really) didn’t like so much. (Hello Kate…Hello Wendy…Hello Tom.…Hello Bristol...) So we (okay, I) was more annoyed having to continue to watch them personally, regardless of talent, than it was about the dancing skills, or lack thereof. The only one I’m not real fond of watching this year is Nancy. A shame she has such an adorable instructor, but I just fast forward through all her stuff. Even she’s not as annoying as some of her controversial predecessors.

As for who I would like to see win? Hands down, JR. All the way around, the most deserving. I hope that’s how it all shakes out. Ha. :) Next week is 80’s week. I’m not sure how to feel about that, but probably, other than Carson, who will have a field day with it….not good. Also…can we puh-leeeeeze fire Brooke now? Pretty please? With Carson on top? I mean, this is a fun show, Brooke….so you ask Chynna “now that you froze on national television in front of millions of people, do you think you can get past it? Or will it haunt you for the rest of the season?” I mean…REALLY? Let’s just grind their faces in it. She’s truly awful. This isn’t Meet the Press, Brooke. You’re not back there to ask the hard-hitting questions and make the contestants squirm…. Lighten up.

In other news, whoever wrote last night’s episode of NCIS should be shot. Casting director, however, gets a gold star. Don’t get me wrong, I loved LOVED the storyline with Abby discovering her past isn’t what she thought it was. Loved them giving Gibbs a chance to be all fatherly with her. And whoever found the actor to play Kyle? Well done, you!! Wow! When he first looked up and we saw his face…..that was kind of freaky wild, wasn’t it? But whoever decided to write Tony DiNozzo as a complete idiot, you should be fired. We’ve seen bits and pieces of his emotional growth over the past few seasons, and this season certainly started off with a bang as far as that goes. It’s smart writing when you can take a character who relies on sophomoric humor to cover his weaknesses, and portray that out to the broad spectrum of behavior, and make it work. It’s good to finally see Tony mature and grow, while still maintaining a charming wit and playfulness. That’s challenging writing, but the best kind of powerful character development when you make it work. Then this week they wrote him like a total boob. It was so ridiculously over the top moronic, without even a speck of balance….I don’t know how that got by, or who thought it was a good idea. Talk about taking Jurassic steps backwards. Thankfully he had very little to do with the forward motion of the overall team story, so we can forget it ever happened. It’s episodes like this one that make me really, really want to write for television… Just sayin.

Don’t forget to enter this week’s Free Stuff Friday contest! Details in Tuesday’s blog!

What, no theme song from Caddyshack?

Okay, so yes, I watched DWTS, asking myself pretty much the entire time why…..WHY? Sure, the DVR cuts it down to like, half the time, and yet, that’s still an hour of my life I can never get back.

So, last night was Dancing to the Movies Night! To say it was a night of uneven performances is like saying that everyone wasn’t completely, ridiculously gaga that Cher was in the audience. Now, I do like that so many of the celeb dancer’s families come out to support them (both Arquette sisters there tonight, along with the everpresent Courtney Cox) as well as a number of former contestants always sprinkled through the audience. But, in some cases, like last night, you kinda cringe for them, too, when they don’t do as well and you know the fam is right there witnessing the downfall.

One thing I also realized last night was that, I always thought I was in it more for the dancers who start out choppy and with no experience and sort of go from duckling to swan in front of our very eyes. This season….well, we have a lotta ducklings, is what I’m sayin. It’s just…that swan transformation isn’t so much happening. At least…not all that much. I mean, I’m amazed they can do even part of what they do given the tight time frame, the pressure, the scrutiny….but even those with some natural talent, like Chynna, and, previously, Kristin, really seem to kind of stay on that same plane. I get that they’re doing harder dances each week, so it might seem like the skill set isn’t improving, where the improvement was just that they could even do that caliber of dance now, where they couldn’t have two weeks ago. But, bottom line…it’s not making for a very interesting show.

Last night Chynna went blank during the routine — total nightmare moment for any performer - and Tony injured himself, and while you felt for them both, it was a prescient opening to a show that stayed rocky and uneven. So was the judging! Overall, Len was so harsh, but then he’d add something nice at the end, which no one heard over all the booing. I kept wanting to tell him…lead with the nice thing, then tell them where to work on it. Carrie Ann was all over the place, and…well, to be honest, I fast forward through Bruno now. So that wasn’t at all helping the “fun factor” of the night.

I also thought it was odd and kinda pointless to have the troupe doing a few numbers on performance night. I can only assume they added this completely needless filler in order to set up the next dance, or something (with it being movie night, there were tons of stage props…) But, even then, it was like “let’s show you just how much BETTER this could be if they could really dance!” And…..now back to the crappy stuff. I just didn’t think it was right, or fair to the already stressed out performers. Save that stuff for results night.

So…all that said…. My utter favorite delight of the night was, hands down, Carson Kressley as a pirate. I mean, they made him look really hot! Carson. Kressley. Hot. I’m so not kidding. The rehearsal footage with Amazing Sword Guy was hilarious. Then the dance went horribly askew as their tossed aside swords rolled back under their feet and Carson kind of forgot the dance…but I DID NOT CARE. Smiled and laughed through the whole thing. I wish, for him, always, that he danced better. But speaking for my entertainment? Not a requirement. And Anna is such a great partner for him. I can’t remember the days when she was the bitchy redhead. She’s totally delightful.

Felt bad for Chynna, was….not wanting to see Nancy Grace in biker shorts, pretty dress or no….thought the idea of Hope and Maks‘ Toy Story dance was super cute, but Hope remains kinda clunky, though she’s trying hard not to be. She’s a jock in heels whose just more jock than heels, is all. Not sure what the whole Len tirade was about afterward, but that was just another bump in a very rocky performance road. Ricki and Derek were really great, did like their dance very much. His choreo skills really shine when he has a partner he has to work to make look good. Not that Ricki’s not pulling her share, she is, way more than I thought, but he still works more creatively and less showboaty when he doesn’t have the ringer partner. I’m not sure the 10’s were warranted, but what the hell! The whole night was so wackadoo anyway. And better them than some of the other teams. The choreo alone, to such awful, awful music (really Stoner Music Guy..the theme from Psycho?? Really???) So I was kinda glad that Derek sort of in-your-faced it. Because that was a really sucky luck of the draw.

In other news, Kardashian is still out there shaking his moneymaker, but it always looks like Cheryl is trying really hard not to seduce her baby brother, though she has to pretend she is. It’s kinda…..squicky. But that’s possibly just me. Or, you know…not. Chaz closed the show and while his dancing shows skills improvement every single week, I just get sucked in by his total commitment to every dance he does. He definitely has his mom/dad’s performance genes all through him. But what really wowed me was that, after a super energetic dance, he raced up that long flight of stars - R-A-C-E-D- to finish with the Rocky pose. That his bad knees even allowed that, much less that he had the stamina for it, boggled me…but in a really good way. I don’t get the same kind of joy from him that I do from watching Carson, because Carson so completely owns exactly who he is and what he brings to the show - but I feel very much that protective “root for the underdog” feeling for them both. No way are either of them going home tonight.

Now…lastly…I continue to not get, AT ALL, why there isn’t more universal judge love for JR Martinez. Clearly the best dancer, and by far the best male dancer….he also has everything else going for him as well. He’s charming, self deprecating, funny, humble, dashing…. I was glad to see Len, who I was really beginning to wonder about where JR is concerned, show up in his corner for a change. But, overall, it really stymies me how they gush over just about everyone, but not so much with him. And it’s not like he’s got a superstar fanbase carrying him and they have to mitigate his dominance. Not by any stretch. I’m thankful that the audience gives them the love, because I have loved and been charmed by every one of his performances, then get total buzzkill from the judges. I admire him for coming back each week with that same sunny smile and disposition.

For me, JR and Carson are the only reasons I keep tuning in. Carson for the smiles, and JR because it’s joyful watching him dance. I really really really wish they’d give Carson Brooke’s job. OMG, it would be the Best Backstage Chatter ever!

So….what say you, Blog Babes? Still watching? Who do you love? Who needs to go home tonight? And did you watch Castle? I like how they’re subtly weaving back in the end of last season, with her twinge over surgery and the resurfaced question as to her memory of that day. Liked the emotional nature of the storyline that wasn’t about her mother for a change, but another team member instead. Good Castle Night. :) And tonight we get another house with Mark Harmon….so all is right with my world…. :)

A strawberry encore…and Free Stuff Friday winner!

Several of my good friends are having birthday’s this week, so I’m reprising a cupcake favorite recipe from Johnnie Gabriel’s wonderful Southern Cooking cookbook, on request (and, you know, maybe because I’d bring the freshly baked goodies to a certain class I’m teaching tomorrow, where, possibly, they both might be in attendance.) So Barri and Mary.…this one’s for you!! Happy birthday!!!

It was lovely to get some late season fresh strawberries and have one last summer cupcake fling! Enjoy!

Johnnie Gabriel’s Yellow Layer Cake…but by the cup. With Strawberries.

1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1/2 cup butter
2 cups sugar
4 large eggs, separated
3 cups, all purpose flour, sifted before measuring
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup cream
1 tablespoon vanilla

1 cup chopped strawberries

Aren’t you drooling already? Now, I used heavy cream for cream, but totally missed the tablespoon size of the vanilla potion and used the more regular teaspoon amount. The cake turned out amazing, so I’m not sure I care. But there you go.

Steps
1. Preheat oven to 350 Her cake recipe made 30 cupcakes for me. Your mileage may vary. So, just put a bunch of liners in a some pans and get ready.
2. In large bowl with electric mixer, beat the shortening, butter, sugar until fluffy. Scrape down sides of the bowl.
3. Add the yolks one at a time. (I had all mine in one bowl, so did my best to plop one out at a time.) Mix well after every addition.
4. In separate large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
5. In medium bowl, combine milk, buttermilk, cream, and vanilla. (We’re up to three bowls now…just sayin. I have bowls, but this recipe uses some serious bowls.)
6. Beginning and ending with the flour, alternately add the flour combo and the milk combo in four additions each. (Now, even I can do the math and realize it’s hard to end with flour that way, so just save some from the last addition. Do what Johnnie tells you. That’s my motto. So far, so good.) Scrape down the bowl after every addition, and just blend until assimilated. (aka Borg’d)
7. Now, (in yet another bowl) use a whisk or whisk attachment in your blender, and whisk the egg whites until they hold a peak. I took this to mean a soft peak, so as soon as it would “stand up” at all, I stopped.
8. Gently fold the whites into the batter in three additions.
9. In another bowl (you’re scrounging now, right? I was….) wash, clean, core and cut up a cup of strawberries. The recipe calls for 3/4 cup here, but when dividing it into cupcakes, more was better.
10. Gently fold strawberries in to the batter.
11. Fill cups approx 2/3 full (I use an ice cream scooper regularly now, the kind that has the auto ejecter handle. I’m sure that’s the technical term. Use only with supervision. The term. Not the scooper.)
12. Bake 22-26 minutes, until tester comes out clean. Tops should be a golden color. I rotated the pans halfway through. One pan was done in 22, the other in 24.
13. Set pans on racks and let cool for 15 to 20 minutes, then take the cupcakes out to cool the rest of the way.

And how heavenly do they look? Pretty darn heavenly, I’ll tell you what! Now, the frosting was a toss up for me. Johnnie recommends her Cream Cheese frosting, but we did a cheese frosting last week, and I felt the strawberries would work well with a whipped topping. And they would. With a little chunk of strawberry plopped on top for fun. But in her recipe you can fold chopped strawberries into the frosting and I thought….oh, what the hell. Let’s DO THIS. So…I did. No regrets. Again, do what Johnnie tells you.

Johnnie’s Cream Cheese Frosting:

1/2 cup butter
1 8 oz pack cream cheese
1 16 oz box confectioners sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chopped strawberries

(Johnnie also adds 1 cup chopped pecans as an optional ingredient. Because of the berries in this, I opted out of the option.)

Steps:
1. In large bowl (or whatever tub you’re reduced to using at this point) combine butter and cream cheese, mixing well until smooth.
2. Add the confectioners sugar in increments, scraping down the sides and bottom of the bowl once or twice while adding.
3. Add vanilla and blend.
4. Fold in chopped strawberries. (Again, she calls for 3/4 cup, I used 1 full cup so there would be berries on all the cupcakes.)

And what you get is strawberry heaven in a cup, let me tell you! Now, for me, the cream cheese frosting was a bit of an overkill on richness and sugary flavor, but the addition of the fresh chunks of fruit, totally cut the sweetness down and made it all work out quite deliciously. I’d still like to try my whipped topping alternative. Johnnie also recommends mixing half her cream cheese frosting with half her buttercream frosting for a different flavor. This is the only time I didn’t follow Johnnie, and I’m okay with that. Just…don’t tell her, okay? Never anger the dessert gods (and goddesses…and she is one.) I also think I’d like to try the cream cheese frosting I used on the red velvet cupcake a few weeks back. That creamy flavor would work well, especially with buttermilk in both the batter and frosting. Mmmm. And, mostly, because it gives me an excuse to make more of these!

Give this a try. A perfect spring cake, cheerful, rich, yummy, and easy to make. Just not maybe as easy to clean up after. But SO worth it!

Now, it’s time to give away this week’s Cupcake Blog Candy... an advance review copy of SUGAR RUSH!! Thanks to all of you who entered. And the lucky winner is…..Susan Harris!!

Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday weekend and enjoys a few Columbus Day sales on Monday! I’ll be back here with a new cupcake recipe next week…and, of course, another contest!

Until then…happy baking!

The spats have left the building!

So, my Ballroom Burnout got a slight rejuvenating reprieve last night during the results hour. But first! I loved that Chubby Checkers was in the ballroom, twisting again for all he was worth. However, dude….when your first name is Chubby….skinny jeans are not going to be your best look. Just sayin! For 70, however, he otherwise looked and sounded great!

Then it came time to deliver the news on who was going home…and who was in the Bottom Three. Now, you might suspect it would be maybe Chaz, who snagged the lowest score, or Nancy Grace, possibly a Kardashian or Arquette… And you would be wrong times three! (Or is that four?) All of them were safe! So was JR, Ricki, and Chynna. I know, you’re doing the math right? So that means that along with my dearest Carson, Hope and Kristen were also bottom three. I knew then my ballroom days were over, as Carson was pretty much the only shred of motivation I had to even watch the recap show. Then he was announced safe! HA! I love that!

So…of course, it was Hope, and they’d just put Ballas in the bottom two to mess with his head. Which I was perfecttly, even joyously okay with. And given how karma friendly I am, that is saying much. So color me shocked when it was Kristen & Mark who were outta there. HA squared!

Sure, Kristen didn’t deserve the early boot if you’re judging based on dancing skillz, but this show has never been about that. (If you don’t believe me, watch the season with Bristol Palin….) So maybe this was karmic payback for the Bristol Movement, because Mark was her partner that season. And if I had any urge, whatsoever, to feel sorry for either of them, that notion died as I watched them stand on the stage and await their fate when it was between them, and Hope/Maks. Hope/Maks, by the way, who were taking their placement with grace, even dry laughter. Because, seriously? That’s what you do. It’s a dance show for gods sake. But someone forgot to tell Mark that. From the moment they were named in bottom two, Mark stepped away from Kristen so fast I thought maybe her dress singed his fingers or something. I mean, way to support your partner there, champ! So she stood there alone, looking forlorn, waiting for the announcement, and Ballas just looked pissed that they even dared put him in the bottom two.

So when it was his and Kristen’s names announced and not Maks and Hope, and both of their mouths dropped open in utter shock (such good sportsmanship there…) yeah….I was even more okay with the surprise ouster than I already was.

And sure, they said all the right things to Tom before taking their farewell twirl around the floor. I only wish Ballas might actually get that this wasn’t because folks didn’t vote for Kristen. It was because they actively wouldn’t vote for his showboating self. Most of the blogs I skimmed this morning echoed my thoughts exactly on that…so whew, not just me!

Your mileage may vary. But now that the King of Spats is no more…I might have to watch again. Also? When they showed some of the behind the scenes footage we didn’t see performance night, my feelings about JR Martinez being pretty much the best guy ever were completely cemented. From the love everyone gave him backstage, to his words of comfort and support to everyone else. Hero material coming, going, and staying. I hope he’s staying around for a long while and the exposure on this show gets him more work.

Don’t forget to enter this week’s Free Stuff Friday contest! Advance copy of SUGAR RUSH, up for grabs! See yesterday’s blog post for all the details. And good luck!!

Ballroom Burnout

So….last night on DWTS it was Dancing for Tears night, where each dancer celebrates or honors their most memorable year and wrenches our emotions all over the dance floor. Normally, I keep the Kleenex box handy.

Last night, as I was watching I wondered why I found myself not all that engaged. JR’s lead in story to his dance was definitely moving, but though the dance was lovely and the final moment where he’s standing in the fog was powerful…nary a tear welled for me. Not because I’m immune to the cause he was dancing to honor, normally that’d have me bawling like a Hallmark Commercial Marathon. I think I’m just suffering Ballroom Burnout. I know. The horror.

There were some really good dances last night. Derek & Ricki come to mind. I kept thinking as I watched them how well he shows off his partner and choreographs to that end. I so wish Ballas would pay heed to that, but I think his mind set is if he outdances his partner that no one will notice if they’re not all that good. I dunno. I’m not as All That about Kristin’s ability as the judges are…but then, see above re: BB. I’m not All That about anyone. I love that Tony is finally getting high marks, but Chynna isn’t setting my world on fire. And David makes me uncomfortable, he really does, so watching his shirtless rhumba was squeamy (and picking the sex dance in honor of his daughter….weird only for me? K.) Carson was the only one who really got me grinning last night. Otherwise…honestly? I can’t even remember anything really sticking in my mind today. It’s not Must See Ballroom anymore.

I did tape The Sing Off last night…and I gotta say….even in a quick skim through of the performances, that was 100% more enjoyable on pretty much every level. So…I think that’s my new Monday Night Guilty Pleasure. I’ll watch the ballroom recap from now on…with my finger poised on the FF button. Just me? I dunno…. What say you, Blog Babes? Are you not feelin’ it this season, either?

I gave a quick view over the weekend to the second installment of a few of the freshmen fall series and in pretty much every instance, the second episode built onto the foundation established in the premiere in a really positive way. Most especially with The Gifted Man (now with less Dead Ex Wife), which was on the bottom of my New Show pile last week. For now, it at least stays on the DVR list. I liked the greater complexity that’s starting to be revealed on Persons of Interest, and how the police detective is going to get pulled into the game. Clever!

Not so sure my tried-n-true series did as well on building up in Week 2. Mentalist was just okay, as was Grey’s, and even The Good Wife felt like more of a segue way episode. Blue Bloods was good, and Castle has redeemed itself. Amazing Race, also good…though I was both shocked and disappointed (n that specific order) as to which two teams went home. I didn’t mind Ethan/Jenna heading out. Don’t love all the teams (Team Bro-Sis need therapy, not a race) but I am very much enjoying the scenery and the tasks. They earn that Emmy every year, that they do.

Aaaaand, that ends this portion of the I Watch Too Much TV blog rant. Hey, it’s been raining non stop for two freaking months now. I’ve bonded far too closely with my DVR and some really off the wall cupcake recipes. As you’ve noticed…I’m sure. :) But at least I multi task while watching!

So…to celebrate the sun coming out today, let’s giveaway another advance review copy of the first release in The Cupcake Club Romance series, SUGAR RUSH (on sale, Dec 27!!) this week for the Free Stuff Friday Contest. You in? Good! To enter, just send an email to donna@donnakauffman.com with “Hello, Sun!” in the subject line. I’ll draw one name from the pile and announce the winner here on Friday.
